видимо, все кто знает, для чего такой зарядник нужен, сразу поняли и вопросов не задавали :))
Вообще, такого типа зарядник (эдакий комбайн) крайне популярен среди моделистов.
Заряжает/разряжает почти все известные типы аккумов: NiMh, NiCd, Li-ion, LiFePo(экзотика, кмк), Li-pol (используется в современных РУ моделях), даже может Pb (свинец заряжать).
Что-то вроде такого универсала, на котором очень удобно заряжать только модельные акки Li-Pol (позволяют балансировать сборки во время зарядки/разрядки). Все остальное, имхо, компромисс.
Если РУ моделями не увлекаетесь, то, скорее всего, будет не нужно. От слова совсем.
Для бытового использования (зарядки/разрядки NiMh аккумов, и литий-ионных различных типоразмеров), кмк, более подходящая зарядка это LaCrosse (и ее китайские аналоги: Liitokala Lii-500 и Opus BT-C3100).

I believe I have enough side issues corrected to do some driving. The turn signals work. The ignition key is installed. That took several days because it required modifying the column. The 914 has early versions and late versions, and they do not interchange. I bought a late column on ebay and the mounting holes don't match. The late switch and lock won't go in an early column without severe modification, which mine now has. The tach is working. I made an optical pickup and mounted it on the back face of the motor. there was only one hole available so I hope that is enough. I pre tested the output and got a perfect square wave going to the tach, but the tach still didn't work. I took the tach apart and modified it and now the tach works. I got lucky here because I had no schematic and was working blind. I wish I did have a schematic of a VDO tach. I'm not done with this because I want to make an adaptor which works without having to modify the tach itself. The next big hurdle before I order lithium is the charger. It has the wrong profile for lithium and I don't even like it for lead. My approach is current limit in initial phase, voltage limit, then stop when the current reduces to 10 percent of it's initial value. This for lead and lithium. This approach is even good for nicd and nimh although it is seldom used this way. Next, the low voltage schematic that was furnished with the kit is unreadable in it's present form, so I redrew it. I discovered what i think is an error and after I make some changes, I'll comment further.

          Who Suffers From Anxiety        
People who you would never suspect in a million years! In fact, Anxiety is such a widespread disorder that virtually ANYONE can suffer from it. Your uncle Buddy, your Grandma Jean, your sister Annie, your neighbor Joe, your best friend Patti, or your brother George.

But, because Anxiety is one of those 'sweep it under the carpet', “embarrassment-type-I-think-I-might-be-going-crazy” disorders, people don't like to talk about it. Or admit they are long time sufferers.

Especially if you are someone always in the public eye, such as Kim Basinger. Kim had a long, difficult struggle with Anxiety disorder, and kept it a secret for quite a good portion of her life. You would never guess it to see her up on the 'silver screen' though would you? But she in fact has spoken out publicly about her battle with Anxiety in the
hopes that this may raise awareness of this dreaded disorder. And it has. She is one brave soul to expose a huge portion of her private life like this. Kudos to you Kim!

Let us not forget also that Anxiety is believed to be an inherited disorder, although your mom or pop may not show the outward symptoms of it. Remember, this is an embarrassment disorder, or one that makes the sufferer believe they are, or are going, crazy. However, not every person who has experienced an Anxiety attack will develop a full blown disorder, but don't discount the fact that potentially they COULD.

Here's an interesting statistical fact for you. According to NIMH(National Institute of Mental Health) approximately 2.4 MILLION adult Americans suffer from some form of Anxiety or Panic Disorder. That's about 40 Million! And, it is twice as common in women as it is in men. Hmmm. . .Maybe this could be a contributing factor in why women worry so much about things? ;-)

Coincidentally, the major reason for people not knowing what is happening to them, or that they are suffering from Anxiety or Panic Disorder COULD be attributed to the fact that many cases reported began in adolescence. Therefore, a child may not be as affluent in describing what they are experiencing compared to the ability of that of an adult.

The key here is to LISTEN TO YOUR CHILDREN!! You would NOT want them to
endure a childhood full of suffering and not even know the reason for it.

Another interesting fact to be aware of is that Anxiety attacks don't only happen when a person is awake! They can, and often do, happen while sleeping. How scary do you think that may be to wake up to? Indescribable would be putting it MILDLY.
          How to Change the Battery in the Motorola Walkie Talkie        
Motorola manufactures several different types of 2 way radios and walkie-talkies. There are many uses for these devices, and they are commonplace in many industries and organizations. 1Hold the walkie-talkie with the display side facing your palm and slide the battery cover door down until you feel it release from the plastic locks. Lift the battery cover door off to expose the NiMH battery.
2Remove the spent NiMH battery by lifting up on one of the edges until it is free from the walkie-talkie housing.
3Insert a new NiMH battery with the small metal contact points facing down. Be sure to align the battery properly so that the metal contact points match up with the small metal prongs inside the battery compartment. If the red “Stop” sign is visible when inserting the battery, it is upside down and must be turned over to be properly installed.
4Place the battery cover door back onto the walkie-talkie and slide it up until you feel it lock into the proper position.

          Septembers        
This week was Vacation Bible School at our church, and you'd think that would be enough going on....but actually, we also had T-ball and swimming lessons, too!  What a FUN, crazy week!  Thankfully, the kids are doing remarkably well, considering all of the busyness...

We'll start with the VBS pictures--since that took up our mornings.  The theme this year was "Unleash the Power of God", and so we got to be SUPERHEROES all week!

In fact, as the week went on, I started finding a strange masked man in unlikely places around our house...including on top of Joel's truck.  



But thankfully that masked man was kind and gentle enough to rescue my crying baby....

The last night, we had a program, and both the kids got up on stage!  Lily and her friends, Mason and Luke, were inseparable this week, but I think that was because she insisted on holding both of their hands "so they were always by me". 
 

One day, we had a big rainstorm, so the kids went out to play in the puddles...

Oliver also had his first T-ball game this week.  He is loving it!  Joel is helping coach, so that makes it even more fun.  



 Lily decided to get in on the dugout-action at one point....

In the afternoons, after naptime, the kids watch an episode of Little House on the Prairie.  We have been reading the books for the last few months, and now it is so fun to see them get into the show so much, too!

We also have been going to swimming lessons this week.  Thankfully, they've been taking them with their friends, Taylor and Mason--so that makes it even MORE fun!

I'm thinking that after this week--are going to appreciate some down time for a while!  And we're excited to get into a more normal summer routine, too.  Yay for summer!

Introduction

Whether it is fluorescent lighting, dental fillings, antique switches, gold mining or thermometers, the element mercury (Hg) is present in the world we live.  Many of the mercury containing products give us comfort, are used to provide us with information, and even allow us to control our environment.  While these products are safe, they could potentially expose people to a plethora of toxic compounds if an accident should occur.   Symptoms of mercury exposure include seizures, memory loss, and in some cases, death.  Because of these risks, several guidelines and regulations have been developed that limit the amount of mercury people can be exposed to, and special methods are required for cleaning up mercury if an accident should occur.  Currently the time weighted average limit for mercury varies depending on regulating agency.  For OSHA, the limit is 0.1mg/m3*; NIOSH sets the limit at 0.05mg/m3*; and the ACGIH has a limit of 0.025mg/m3*.  Since mercury vapor is not something people can see, how do they determine their amount of exposure?  Arizona Instrument, LLC manufactures the J505 Atomic Fluorescence Analyzer; a handheld atomic fluorescence spectrophotometer that measures the concentration of mercury in air.  The lower detection limit of this instrument is 50ng/m3 (0.000050mg/m3), and it can detect as high as 0.5mg/m3.  These detection limits exceed the current industrial exposure limits, as well as clean-up levels for public facilities.


Atomic Fluorescence Spectroscopy (AFS)
When an atom is excited by an input of energy, one of its electrons transitions from a stable ground state to an unstable excited state.  Once the source of energy is removed, the electron returns to its ground state and the absorbed energy is emitted as a photon (light).  This process is called fluorescence.  Often the amount of energy given off is not the same as the energy going in.  This is not the case for mercury, which makes it special.  When the energy required to excite an electron is the same energy as the photon it gives off when it returns to its ground state, it is called resonance fluorescence, and is easily detectable using AFS.  The J505 instrument uses a mercury lamp to excite the mercury atoms at the 254nm wavelength, and then uses a detector to measure the emission of the photons, at the same wavelength, as the electrons return to their stable ground states. Because AFS measures the emission of photons, this technique does not have interferences, such as hydrocarbons, hydrogen sulfide, and ammonia, which are often problematic for traditional detection methods.   The specifications for the J505 Atomic Fluorescence Analyzer are below.  
Atomic Fluorescence Spectroscopy should not be confused with Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (AAS).  In AAS, a light source of known wavelength and intensity is passed through a sample of interest. Some of the energy of the source light is absorbed by the sample as it energizes electrons in the material from the ground state to an excited state. A detector is placed at the end of the pathway to determine how much of the energy passed through. The difference between the energy of the source light and the energy of the light that arrives at the detector is directly proportional to the concentration of analyte in the sample.  One of the drawbacks of this technique is that there are a number of other common molecules that can absorb energy at the same wavelength as mercury.  To compensate for these unwanted absorptions, manufacturers use a variety of filtering techniques to limit background interference. While these filtration principles are sound, they come at the cost of a more complicated and bulkier instrument. Further, AAS can also have physical limitations that may limit low level sensitivity. At very low concentrations, the amount of absorbed light, when compared to the intensity of the incident light source, can become indistinguishable from electronic noise, making detection at these levels more challenging.

Una pequeña, íntima pero preciosa boda fue la que inmortalizamos en este lugar, la de Leslie y Mehdi que se trasladaron desde diferentes puntos del mundo hasta Granada, para unir sus vidas y dar lugar a un matrimonio que desprende amor a raudales. 

En los mismos jardines del Parador realizamos el reportaje de recién casados mientras los invitados disfrutaron de la rica gastronomía de la zona con platos típicos.

          Hyundai's first full-EV: 'BLUEON'        

Hyundai Motor Co. today unveiled the company’s and Korea’s - first Full Speed Electric Vehicle (FSEV) named ‘BlueOn,’ opening a new era in eco-friendly technology. We are proud to introduce the world to BlueOn, which was fully developed in Korea and displays Hyundai’s latest technological advancements,” said Dr. Hyun-Soon Lee, Vice Chairman at Hyundai’s Corporate R&D Center. “Consumers’ interests and demand for eco-friendly cars are rising and securing such advanced technology is critical in becoming an industry leader. Hyundai is dedicated to reducing its carbon footprint and satisfying market needs.” 
Hyundai unveiled the car at the Blue House yesterday, in the presence of Korean President Lee Myung-Bak and Ministers from the Ministry of Knowledge Economy and Ministry of Environment. During the unveiling ceremony, President Lee and Hyundai’s Vice Chairman Lee test-drove one of the new vehicles together on the Blue House premises. 


Test Fleets 



Hyundai invested a total of about 40 billion won over a one-year period to create BlueOn, which is based on Hyundai’s small hatchback, i10. The electric version of i10 was first unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 2009. 
Beginning with today’s ceremony, Hyundai is planning to provide 30 BlueOn vehicles as test fleets to various government organizations in Korea by October. These vehicles will be mainly used to help develop and test charging infrastructures for about two years, until August 2012. Furthermore, these cars will be used for promotional purposes, starting with the upcoming G20 summit, to boost Korea’s eco-friendly image. 
The name ‘BlueOn’ derives from Hyundai’s Blue Drive strategy, which encompasses the company’s eco-friendly products and technologies. The word ‘On’ symbolizes “switch on.” 





Innovative LiPoly Batteries, Virtual Sound


BlueOn has a compact body with an overall length of 3,585 mm, overall width of 1,595 mm and overall height of 1,540 mm. It is equipped with a highly efficient electric motor powered by an innovative 16.4 kWh LiPoly (lithium-ion polymer) battery technology that offers numerous advantages over other battery types. BlueOn boasts a maximum power of 81ps(61kW) and maximum torque of 21.4kg/m(210Nm).
As pure electric vehicles operate only with the battery and electric motor, the battery’s lifespan and storage capacity determines the vehicle’s performance. Hyundai chose LiPoly batteries because compared with previous nickel-metal hydride batteries (NiMH), LiPoly delivers the same power with 30 percent less weight and 40 percent less volume, boosting efficiency and leaving more interior space for passengers.
Furthermore, the car has been designed to prevent overcharging and collision-related safety issues. Hyundai also conducted hundreds of thousands of kilometers’ worth of endurance testing to secure safety. BlueOn boasts a maximum speed of 130km/h and 0-100 km/h is achieved in 13.1 seconds, better than some gasoline models in the same class.
BlueOn also features a Virtual Engine Sound System (VESS), which creates an artificial sound for the safety of pedestrians, as electric vehicles make little to no sound when driving at low speeds.




Recharging


BlueOn can travel as much as 140 km on a single charge. It also accommodates dual recharging methods: a 220V household power and a 380V industrial-strength power, which promises quick recharging speeds. Under the household power, the battery will be fully recharged within six hours. Under the quick charge method, the battery can be recharged to about 80 percent of its capacity within 25 minutes. Hyundai will collaborate with the Seoul Metropolitan Government and other government agencies to build recharging facilities.
In addition, the engine-driven components were electrified so that the electric motor-driven power steering, electric water pump and regenerative brake system could be adapted to BlueOn. Furthermore, for the driver’s convenience, an advanced telematics system showing the charge status and location of recharging stations is installed. A 4.2-inch TFT LCD Supervision Cluster that provides voice guidance has also been installed.
Hyundai plans to expand its manufacturing capabilities for BlueOn next year, carrying out test productions and making about 2,500 units by the end of 2012.

          Our 2017 Skinny Award dinner; a wonderfully joyful and inspiring evening!         
Our Class Size Matters Skinny award dinner was held last Tuesday, June 20, and it was terrific, despite a last minute change of venue because the restaurant where it was supposed to be held unexpectedly closed. Many people told me it was the best Skinny award dinner ever. Amir of Casa La Femme welcomed us with open arms; the restaurant is luxurious and spacious, with good food, and a belly dancer even turned up at the end of the evening. Sorry if you didn't make it, but there's always next year. Below is the speech I gave and some photos; there are many more on the Class Size Matters Facebook page here. Welcome to our 9th annual Skinny award dinner. This is always one of the most joyous and inspiring evenings of the year for me and I hope for all of you as well.

When we started this in 2009 we held it at a little café on Chambers Street. Never did I imagine that I would still be doing this nine years later. Now I want to explain why this is called the Skinny awards: First of all, we’re a Skinny organization, with a very modest budget; and the name is meant to contrast with the Broad award, given by the billionaire Eli Broad to public school systems that conformed to his corporate reform ideology. Finally, the award is given to people who give us the real “Skinny” on NYC schools.

There are also a bunch of previous Skinny award winners I’d like to recognize who are here tonight:

Diane Ravitch won our first Skinny award in 2009 – and since then has led the nation, through her incredible intellect, knowledge and passionate and eloquent writing in advocating for our public education system, and protecting it from the privatization efforts of and the assorted billionaires, corpocrats and Silicon Valley executives who would like to privatize education I barely have time to read her prolific and prodigious blog every day – I have no idea how she manages to write it all.

Also here tonight is Robert Jackson who received the award in 2010 – for his role as the chief
Robert Jackson, Gretchen Mergenthaler; Sarah Morgridge
plaintiff in the CFE lawsuit, in which he sued to obtain funding equity for NYC schools and also for his excellent work chairing the City Council Education Committee for many years.

Regents Chancellor Betty Rosa is here tonight; please give her a round of applause. Her election as Chancellor is probably the best thing that happened to education in our state in many years; she won the Skinny award along with Regent Kathy Cashin in 2012.

In 2013, Teacher and bloggers extraordinaire Arthur Goldstein and Gary Rubinstein, received the Skinny awards, and in 2014, Carol Burris former principal of South Side HS on Long Island who is now doing a stellar job as Executive director of the Network for Public Education.

Also here tonight is the amazing Lisa Rudley Executive Director of NYS Allies for Public Education; Kemala Karmen from NYC Opt out and Rosalie Friend, Jane Maisal, Katie Lapham and Fred Smith from Change the Stakes– who collectively won the award in 2015 for their amazing work leading the opt out movement.

Now for the 2017 Skinny awards.

Wendy Lecker from the Education Law Center is not only a brilliant pro bono attorney but also has a terrific weekly column in the Stamford Advocate newspaper. She has represented the rights of NYC public school students since the days of the Campaign for Fiscal Equity case, and in numerous successful lawsuits since then -- including making the NYC Department of Education comply with the law when it comes to holding borough hearings on the

Contracts for Excellence plans.

Most recently, she forced Governor Cuomo to provide legally mandated funds to struggling schools despite his efforts to withhold them. She is about to represent CSM and NYC parents on another legal matter, which I’d hoped I could announce tonight, but has been unfortunately delayed due to circumstances out of our control. Wendy Lecker, will you come up and accept your well-deserved Skinny award?

One of the most extraordinary stories of this year is how a student newspaper at Townsend Harris HS in Queens called the Classic helped bring down an interim principal named Rosemary Jahoda, by reporting on numerous examples of her unacceptable behavior, including refusing to address the discrimination of Muslim students, delaying sending student transcripts to colleges, micromanaging teachers, and other instances of insensitivity to students and teachers alike. They live-streamed a student sit-in to protest her actions when the Superintendent was visiting the school, and posted a recording of the principal's conversation with a staff member, in which she used foul language.

For all their conscientious reporting, the newspaper received the ultimate compliment from DOE officials in the age of Trump, who called their stories “fake news.” Instead, a teacher at the school countered this way, and I quote: "These students double and triple check their sources and the DOE should have done as much vetting on Miss Jahoda."

Their work was repeatedly hailed in the NYTimes, WNYC and local papers for helping to build support for the principal’s removal, which finally occurred in April. Mehrose Ahmad and Sumaita Hasan, students and co-editors of the Classic, and your faculty adviser, Brian Sweeney please come up and accept your well=deserved skinny award for your brilliant reporting and courage, and for giving us the real Skinny on NYC public schools.

Laura Barbieri of Advocates for Justice
The next awardees are very special to me. Advocates for Justice have fought for the rights of public school students in innumerable cases, including representing CSM in a lawsuit we helped file against Arthur Schwartz went up to argue the case in state court, he was the sole attorney against five attorneys for the city and the DOE, and an army of other attorneys who trooped in from three private white shoe law firms representing Success Academy and other charter schools.

Yet Arthur was not daunted, argued the case brilliantly, and we would have won that lawsuit, except in the meantime the Legislature and the Governor changed the law and took that clause out.  allowing the DOE to only charge $1 to charter schools for co-locating in public school building; as the state law said at that time that if the DOE if they chose to give space to charter schools they would have to charge them market rates. When

Since then Arthur and Laura Barbieri, Special counsel at Advocates for Justice, have sued DOE to stop other charter co-locations and against charter school discrimination against special needs students; Laura has also represented the parents and students in E. Ramapo in federal court, against their school board diverting public school funds to promote their own religious schools and discriminating against students based on race, color, national origin, ethnicity, and religion.

Most recently, Laura represented Class Size Matters in the lawsuit we pursued to ensure that School Leadership Team meetings are open the public and we won vs DOE, first at the Supreme Court level and then in a unanimous decision by the Appellate Court this fall. And incredibly, like Wendy, they do all this work for free! Arthur and Laura – please come up and receive well-deserved our Skinny award .

The amazing parents of Save CPE1
Now last but not least, we want to celebrate and honor an amazing act of organizing organization and advocacy by the parents of Central Park East, who refused to let the principal installed at their school destroy its wonderful spirit and traditions. The school founded by Debbie Meier in 1974 has long prided itself on its progressive philosophy and democratic form of government., and when parents discovered the DOE had installed a principal who not only had not background in progressive education but put teachers who opposed her in the rubber room, grilled children in her office trying to get them to make unfounded accusations against their teachers without the knowledge of parents, and lied to them, they didn’t give up.

Instead, they fought back. They attended every single PEP meeting and urged the Chancellor to act, held numerous rallies, signed petitions, and finally in April, sat in at their school overnight – daring the DOE to arrest them. The last straw was when the principal banned two of the parent leaders from the school on trumped up charges, Jen Roesch and Kaliris Salas-Ramirez. After being subjected to more than a year of bad PR and damaging headlines, the Mayor and the Chancellor finally conceded and the principal resigned last month. For their incredible bravery, hard work, and persistence in saving their school, will Jen and Kaliris on behalf of Save CPE I, please come up and accept your award.



          The Role of Massage in Treating Mental Health Conditions        

In today’s society, many people suffer from differing levels of mental health conditions such as stress, anxiety and depression. The National Institute of Mental Health estimates that 26.2 percent of Americans suffer from a diagnosable mental disorder in a given year. Of those suffering from mental illness, approximately 20.9 million Americans report experiencing mood disorders such as depression, while approximately 40 million suffer from an anxiety disorder.

As the mental health epidemic continues to grow throughout the country, people are turning to traditional medication treatment options as well as seeking positive outcomes from total mind and body approaches such as massage therapy.

“Anxiety and depression are the most common mental conditions we see treated with massage,” explains Maria Geisbert, massage therapist at Elements Timonium. “Basically, anything where there is a need for relaxation and stress relief, massage is going to help. In mental disorders where there’s a lack of serotonin and dopamine, massage can help with that as well.”

Moving from Physicality to Mentality

A shift in mindset is moving people into realizing that massage isn’t only for relieving physical pains or as an indulgence while on vacation. Statistics from the American Massage Therapy Association (AMTA) show that massage is seen as a treatment for total mind and body health as 88 percent of people view massage as beneficial to overall health and wellness.

“Massage is more than a luxury – it’s a healing modality on a physical, mental and spiritual level,” explains Hannah McClure, massage therapist at Elements Westford. “It helps in all aspects of our life. As time progresses, people are starting to see and accept that more. But, many people still need to understand that regular treatments are so therapeutic both physically and mentally.”

According to the AMTA, various research has shown the benefits of using massage to help treat mental health conditions in different types of situations. Some of the highlights of the research that links therapeutic massage with positive mental outcomes include:

  • The Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine reported that massage therapy can reduce symptoms of depression for individuals with HIV disease.
  • Applied Nursing Research reported that massage therapy given during chemotherapy can significantly reduce anxiety and acute fatigue.
  • Military Medicine published research that indicated significant reductions in ratings of anxiety, worry, depression and physical pain after military veterans received massage, as well as declining levels of tension and irritability.
  • Complementary Therapies in Clinical Practice reported on research that found that massage for nurses during work hours can help reduce stress and related symptoms, including headaches, shoulder tension, insomnia, fatigue and muscle and joint pain.

Power of Touch Complements Mental Health Treatments

The traditional treatment for many mental illnesses typically includes taking an assortment of medications to balance out hormone levels and stimulate the nervous system. Through the power of touch, massage has evolved into an additional treatment option for mental health conditions by reducing cortisol and adrenaline, as well as increasing serotonin and dopamine to reduce anxiety depression.

When the stress hormone cortisol was measured before and immediately after a massage, researchers from the University of Miami School of Medicine have found that the therapy lowered levels by up to 53 percent.  Industry research such as this continues to point toward massage therapy as an effective approach to positively affecting the body’s biochemistry in order to treat mental health ailments such as anxiety and depression, as well as complement traditional medical treatments.

Slow, Steady Approach Leads to Greater Results

Massage should be an amazing, wonderful experience and not something that causes stress or nervousness. However, when seeking massage for mental health issues, a client may have issues with touch, darkness or being in a small space such as a massage room. As such, it’s important for therapists to thoroughly review a client’s condition prior to the session, while clients need to be forthcoming with disclosing appropriate information as it relates to their condition and their feelings on the overall massage experience.

If there are any apprehensions about the session, it may be a good idea to start gradually with a basic Swedish massage during a 30-minute session.

“As a therapist, you want to be very aware of your clients’ conditions,” explains Geisbert. “You want to make sure they feel comfortable and that a massage isn’t going to make them nervous, cause a panic attack or create an adverse reaction. It’s important to start small and then go forward from there, especially with someone who is already nervous or stressed out.”

Identifying Need Key to Proper Treatment

Although people are more proactive today with their health and more familiar with looking into preventative and alternative treatment options, there still is a much work that needs to be done to educate the public on the benefits of massage for mental health conditions.

One of the biggest challenges of using massage to treat people with mental health ailments is encouraging clients to be comfortable with discussing their condition with their therapist. Geisbert believes that some people may feel embarrassed or ashamed to discuss their mental health as the topic can still be seen as taboo in our society and they are unsure about how massage can help. She tries to overcome this challenge by being diligent with asking questions pertaining to mental health prior to appointments with her clients so she can make sure she’s addressing all of her clients’ physical and mental needs.

“People may see asking for help as a sign of weakness.  But really it can actually make you stronger,” Geisbert says.

Massage can be a powerful tool for combatting the increasing presence of mental health conditions in our country.           How Do You Tell a Suicide from an Autoerotic Asphyxiation Accident?        

When Cleveland kidnapper Ariel Castro hanged himself in his cell last month, everyone assumed that he had decided to commit suicide rather than face a lifetime in prison. But a new report from the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction suggests that Castro may have actually died in a bizarre autoerotic asphyxiation accident. How do you differentiate between death by suicide and death by autoerotic asphyxiation?

Autoerotic asphyxiation, for those of you unfamiliar with the practice, is an act by which one derives sexual pleasure from depriving his brain of oxygen during sexual activity. In a Slate piece from 2009, Christopher Beam offered a good explanation of how this works:

A man—the vast majority of AEAers are male—loops a belt or rope around his neck, attaches the other end to a door knob or pipe, and lowers himself into a controlled suspension. Sex or masturbation ensues. The pressure from the belt cuts off the flow of blood through the veins in his neck, causing blood to congest in the brain. Oxygen levels drop and carbon dioxide levels increase, producing lightheadedness and, for some, intensifying erotic pleasure.

Sometimes, though, an autoerotic asphyxiator miscalculates, and he dies. In those cases, the death is often labeled a suicide, occasionally because officials and family members do not realize that autoerotic asphyxiation is a thing that people do. But there are usually context clues that can help observant, open-minded investigators tell whether the death was an active choice or a sex game gone wrong.  

A man who attempts autoerotic asphyxiation is after sexual gratification, and thus, in case of accident, his body might be found with pants and underwear lowered or removed. (Indeed, the Associated Press notes that Ariel Castro's “pants and underwear were pulled down to his ankles when he was found.”) If the male victim is clad in women’s clothing—which, for the record, Ariel Castro was not—that’s also a pretty good sign that he did not mean to die.

For a 1992 article in the journal Behavioral Sciences and the Law, Stephen J. Hucker and Ray Blanchard analyzed death scenes from 118 fatal cases of autoerotic asphyxia, then compared them against cases of suicidal asphyxia. They found that “if one classifies all cases where the corpse was nude, cross-dressed, or found with the genitals exposed or accessible as autoerotic accidents and classifies all other subjects as suicides, then one would correctly predict the coroner's verdict in all but 14 of the 235 cases with information.” Suicide victims like to die with their clothes on; in Hucker and Blanchard’s sample, suicides were never fully nude.

If a corpse’s hand is found on or near its genitals, then it might be a sign of a sexual accident. If there’s ejaculate near the body, same thing. The conspicuous presence of tissues, lubricant, bondage gear, pornography, and other masturbatory aids also offers a clue. (Hucker and Blanchard note the popularity of “self-written fantasy material or fantasy props” among autoerotic asphxyia deaths.) An autoerotic asphyxiator will sometimes put protective padding around his noose in order to avoid bruises, or some sort of “quick release device” that is intended to protect against accidental death. People with suicide on their minds never do this.

Also, since an autoerotic asphyxiator craves sexual release, not release from all the troubles of this world, he will generally not leave a suicide note. Now, plenty of suicides don’t leave notes, either. But in Hucker and Blanchard’s sample, autoerotic asphyxia victims never left an explicit suicide note, nor did they verbally communicate any suicidal intent. Finally, as my colleague Josh Voorhees already noted, the report into Ariel Castro’s sudden death found that “no evidence of serious mental illness or indications for suicide precautions were present.” According to the National Institute of Mental Health, more than 90 percent of suicide victims also struggle with depression and other mental health or substance-abuse disorders. The absence of those risk factors in a strangulation death also might serve to indicate an autoerotic asphyxiation accident.

          Transforming Autism Research: Reflections on IMFAR, RDoC, and DSM-5

A year, it seems, is a long time in autism research. In May 2012, the International Meeting for Autism Research (IMFAR) in Toronto was all about DSM-5 and the proposed changes to autism diagnosis contained therein. Up for discussion were the abolition of Asperger syndrome as a distinct condition, the introduction of a new (and still mysterious) diagnosis of “social communication disorder”, and the feared exclusion of many people from autism-specific support and interventions.

Those concerns have not gone away. But 12 months later, at IMFAR 2013 in San Sebastian, the DSM-5 debate was notable by its absence. People had apparently agreed to disagree. And the manual had long since gone to the printers.

Discussion turned instead to comments by Thomas Insel, director of the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH). In a blogpost entitled "Transforming Diagnosis", Insel announced that the institute would be “re-orienting its research away from DSM categories”. “Patients”, he argued, “deserve better”.

Insel's proposed solution is a new research framework - Research Domain Criteria or RDoC. The aim of RDoC is to make connections across different levels of analysis, from genes and neurotransmitters through to brain circuits and behavior. But rather than basing research on existing diagnostic categories, RDoC focuses on broad constructs such as ‘social communication’, ‘cognitive control’, or ‘anxiety’ that cut across existing diagnostic boundaries.

As Insel pointed out, the DSM’s great weakness is “a lack of validity”. This doesn’t mean that it's useless or a waste of time. The key point is that there’s little independent evidence to suggest that people who are diagnosed with the same condition really do belong together - and should be treated differently to people with other diagnoses. We don’t know that their symptoms have the same underlying cause, and we can’t say that their outcomes will be similar, or that they should be offered the same interventions.

These issues were front and centre in the opening address of IMFAR 2013. Focusing on the problem of “comorbidity”, Christopher Gillberg noted that people with autism often meet criteria for several other DSM diagnoses, including ADHD, specific language impairment, and developmental coordination disorder. These, Gillberg argued, are not discrete syndromes, so it is inappropriate to research them separately or to diagnose one condition without considering the implications of the others.

Daniel Geschwind's keynote address on Day 2 raised similar problems with the validity of autism. Reviewing the latest in autism genetics, Geschwind noted that, according to current projections, autism is linked to upwards of 1000 different genetic variations. Although these appear to converge on a smaller number of pathways, most of the genetic risk factors discovered so far also increase the likelihood of other, supposedly unrelated disorders.

Like so many other conditions in the DSM, autism is a mess.

Insel's comments, arriving just days before DSM-5’s publication,  were widely seen as a final blow to the DSM’s credibility and a major snub to its publishers, the American Psychiatric Association. Media coverage spoke of a civil war within psychiatry. But the reality is that the aims of RDoC actually align closely with those of the APA.

Back in 2002, in a document entitled “A Research Agenda for DSM-V”, Dennis Charney and colleagues stated:
“It is our goal to translate basic and clinical neuroscience research relating brain structure, brain function, and behavior into a classification of psychiatric disorders based on etiology and pathophysiology. It is possible, even likely, that such a classification will be radically different from the current DSM-IV approach.
It soon became clear, however, that this radical new approach to diagnosis was not ready for primetime. As Insel noted, the controversy surrounding DSM-5 belies the fact that the changes from DSM-IV have been relatively modest. In the case of autism, the reworking of diagnostic criteria may yet have profound consequences in terms of who receives interventions and services. But conceptually, little has changed. Seventy years after it was first identified, autism is still diagnosed in terms of the collection of behavioral symptoms that also define the condition.

In the absence of reliable alternatives, clinicians will continue to rely on the DSM. But researchers do not have the same excuse. Holding up the current diagnostic criteria as the ‘gold standard’ for research makes it impossible to discover better alternatives.

Writing for the Dana Foundation in 2011, DSM-5 panel member, Steven Hyman, concluded:
“it is critical that the scientific community escape the artificial diagnostic silos that control so much research, ultimately to our detriment.”
Lynn Waterhouse reached a similar conclusion in her 2012 book, “Rethinking Autism”:
“The only viable scientific path… requires researchers to abandon the use of the diagnosis of autism as a basis for research.”

Last year on my journey home from Toronto, I spent the flight reading Jacob Bronowski’s “The Common Sense of Science”, a 1951 history of science that I’d picked up for a few dollars in our local second hand bookstore. I took it with me for no reason other than that it fitted neatly into my hand luggage. But the ideas seemed particularly relevant in the light of the drama and intrigue of the IMFAR meeting.

According to Bronowski, the first step towards scientific understanding is to “order” things into groups, as he put it, “not of identical things, but of things which seem to be or behave alike”. This “ordering” process is necessary if we are to generalize our narrow scientific observations towards a broader understanding of the world. Initially, the “throwing into groups” has to be intuitive, but these intuitions must be tested. If the evidence doesn’t fit, then we should be prepared to refine or even abandon our intuitions and (literally) regroup:
“We order by likeness, and we choose those likenesses which we first judge and then find to have significance” [emphasis added]
Since Kanner, the idea of a discrete condition, “autism”, has made intuitive sense to researchers and clinicians alike. We could metaphorically throw a wide range of people into that group because, although they were different from one another in many ways, they seemed to have something essential in common. What was learned about one sample of autistic people could, we assumed be generalised to others. However, as more evidence has come in, the concept of autism as a coherent entity has been found wanting. This is the “validity” issue that so undermines the DSM.

Insel’s bet is that the “domains” of RDoC do have validity, that they will map better onto underlying biological mechanisms and, crucially, that they will provide clearer insights into appropriate treatments and interventions for individuals. RDoC represents an alternative “ordering” of the human mind. But like the DSM, it needs to be empirically tested, refined, and, if necessary, rejected.

After all the controversy surrounding DSM-5, RDoC represents a fresh start, and a much-needed reframing of the scientific problem. At present, however, it’s little more than a statement of intent, describing how research could and perhaps should proceed. The goals are long term. And while the idea of looking beyond DSM categories is a welcome move, there’s no guarantee that RDoC will succeed in its primary objectives of linking behavioural symptoms back to their underlying biological origins.

Identifying risk genes and their immediate relevance to neural function is likely to be the easy part. The greater challenge will come in working out how these differences interact with other genetic and environmental risk factors, such that some individuals develop into autism, whereas others have completely different outcomes. Given the complexities, both known and unknown, that are yet to be addressed, it seems essential that any biological approach to autism is complemented by research with more immediate benefits to the autism community.

For me, the highlight of IMFAR 2013 was Maureen Durkin's keynote address on the final morning, focusing on the discrepancies in autism diagnosis across countries, cultures, and social classes. In her closing remarks, Durkin emphasized an important distinction - between the current emphasis on autism as an impairment and the alternative view of autism as a disability. Practical strategies for assisting people with sensory and physical disabilities often have the indirect consequence of increasing social participation. It follows, Durkin argued, that research on autism should address similar practical solutions that might lead to greater inclusion of people with autism in society.

DSM-5 has been a long and painful process. Only time will tell if the changes represent a net improvement on DSM-IV. But the debates generated within the scientific community and beyond have served an important purpose, laying bare the questionable assumptions that underpin contemporary autism research. Whatever your views on the specifics of DSM-5 and RDoC, Dr Insel was certainly right about one thing. There is room for improvement. We can do better. Autistic people deserve better.

          Making Choices - Dating a Bipolar Man        


Are you dating a bipolar man, or have you ever been in a relationship with a person, affected by the disorder also known as manic depression? Last night, I went out with a man in Raleigh from Match.com, who is attractive, creative, successful, extremely intelligent - and bipolar -- which I found out on our first date. According to WebMD, "About 5.7 million adults are living with bipolar disorder in the United States."

Before meeting in person, my date and I chatted by phone and text messaged each other. Over the phone we got along pretty well, and appeared to have a great deal in common. When he invited me to go out to dinner with him I happily agreed. We decided to try a chic little Asian restaurant downtown that happens to be new.

While eating our citrus braised beet salads, my date started discussing his last serious relationship. I picked up my glass of white wine, and as I was sipping it, he uttered three words I will never forget.

"I am bipolar," he said.

I almost dropped the glass of wine.

"Oh really," I responded trying to sound perfectly at ease with his statement.

He began talking about being a bipolar man, but he stated it was not, "that big of a deal." My date also indicated that he is fine, and that he does not take any medications or engage in treatment. After his declaration, I found myself thinking about his statement -- and honestly I was caught off guard. I was unsure what to think or how to feel.

I am not going to pretend to know a lot about dating a bipolar man or the actual disorder. I dated a person with pretty serious emotional issues in the past, and it was certainly not the most peaceful time in my life. Perhaps I am judgmental, but I simply know I am not equipped to act as a pseudo therapist, for a person who needs the guidance of a trained professional.

Respect and Personal Choices
I will say I actually respected my date more for telling me that he is bipolar on our first date. I was appreciative of the fact he was so open, and that he was honest enough to allow me to make a choice about dating a bipolar man. I think that more people should embrace that sort of honesty and openness. I definitely realize that nobody is perfect, so I focused on enjoying the rest of the evening, and getting to know more about him.

Life is all about personal choices, and earlier today after a great deal of thought, I made a choice of my own. I came to the conclusion that I definitely do not want to pursue dating a bipolar man.

What is Bipolar Disorder?
According to the National Institute of Mental Health, "Bipolar disorder, also known as manic-depressive illness, is a brain disorder that causes unusual shifts in mood, energy, activity levels, and the ability to carry out day-to-day tasks. Symptoms of bipolar disorder are severe. They are different from the normal ups and downs that everyone goes through from time to time. Bipolar disorder symptoms can result in damaged relationships, poor job or school performance, and even suicide."

Causes
WebMD states, "Though the exact cause of bipolar disorder has yet to be found, scientists confirm that bipolar disorder has a genetic component, meaning the disorder appears to run in families. Some research suggests that multiple factors may interact to produce a chemical imbalance in the brain, which results in bipolar disorder's symptoms of major depression and mania. Examples of environmental factors may include stress, alcohol or substance abuse, and lack of sleep."

My Dating Experience
Ultimately, bipolar disorder can be treated, but I am not willing to gamble on someone else's mental health, in the context of my next romantic relationship. I may sound like a harsh individual, but I have been there done that -- and I have no desire to pursue it in the future.

I am very intuitive and also sensitive, when it comes to personal relationships. I do find that depressed people negatively alter my own usually positive well-being. In the typical Piscean manner, I will take a friend's issue and make it my own. It is almost as though, I identify too deeply with what they are experiencing or feeling. Luckily, the majority of my friends are extremely upbeat, "glass half full" people.

I am moody at times, but my mild mood swings are boringly predictable - hunger and PMS.

Making Contact
When I contacted my date today, I again stressed that I had a very nice time with him and I thanked him for a great date. Although I was not exactly sure what to say, I decided to be upfront about my concerns. I told him that I was not sure if I could date a bipolar person, based upon my own dating history. He inquired about the specifics of my last serious relationship, and I said I did not want to go into it. Really I felt like it would be too much information at that point, considering I did not intend on dating him in the future. He then made a statement that actually reassured me regarding my decision.

"They tagged me as a bipolar man. I never believed it. I am actually more of an Aries."

I am not quite sure of the correlation there, but needless to say I am not going to try to figure out what he means while dating him. Yesterday, on our first date, he felt like being bipolar was significant enough to share his disorder with me over dinner. Today he is trying to act like it was a misdiagnosis, and he is just a stereotypical Aries.

I am going with what he initially revealed to me, in order to avoid the likely confusion and "emotional roller-coaster" down the road.

Bipolar, Aries, who knows? I am definitely choosing to not go there in a dating environment. We did agree to continue as friends, and to hang out in the future. He is a good guy, and while I am not willing to take on a romantic relationship with him, I would love to work on just being friends.

National Educational Standards are Based on Myths and False Premises
Myth 1: International standardized tests are important indicators of international competitiveness
Fact: The U.S. has never scored well on these tests, but still led the world in all economic indicators.
  • The international tests began in the mid-sixties and the most important test, PISA began more recently. Since the 1960s, the U.S. has led the world in every significant prosperity indicator including patents, research and development funding, business formation, growth in productivity (Baker, 2007). During this time, the number of years that U.S. students topped the international test scores? None. (Ravitch, 2013)
  • High test scores are negatively correlated with national indicators of innovation and entrepreneurship (Baker, 2007). China and Singapore know this and are worried (Zhao, 2012).
  • Twenty-five years ago, mediocre scores triggered biased groups to warn “that America’s inadequate education system and workforce skills imperiled our competitiveness and future. Their warnings were followed by a substantial acceleration of American productivity growth in the mid-1990s, and by an American economy whose growth rate surpassed the growth rates of countries that were alleged to have better prepared and more highly skilled workers”(Strauss, 2013).

Myth 2: International tests prove American students don’t perform as well as other industrialized nations’ students.
Fact: The tests don’t compare “apples to apples” for many reasons.
  • For instance, the scores from China come only from Shanghai which is the richest and most educationally elite city in China, which forbids migrant children and represents a mere 2 percent of the students in China. (Nisan, 2013).
  • U.S. scores, by contrast, are a much more representative sampling of our complex demographics. In fact, students from affluent suburban school districts in the U.S. are very competitive with other students. The student groups who don’t perform well tend to come from dysfunctional families and communities of which the U.S. samples contain more than most other OECD (Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development) nations (Strauss, 2013; Carnoy & Rothstein, 2013).
  • The score spread between all countries is fairly narrow. Between the highest performing state in the U.S. and the highest performing nation in the world (Taiwan) in 2009 is only about a 10% difference in raw scores (Schneider, 2009).  Even the spread between Taiwan and the lowest performing “state” (Washington D.C) is only about a 30%. So, that would mean Taiwan scores an “A”, Massachusetts an “A- or B+” and Washington D.C. earns a C-.
  • The validity and reliability of the test itself is under serious question (Carnoy & Rothstein, 2013). Translations may not be good, scoring has not been validated and many student groups are not tested (Schneider, 2009). Many countries “cheat” on the test by using non-representative sampling and by “teaching to the test” to increase student scores (Stephen, 2013).
Myth 3: We should seek to emulate China and Singpore’s rigid educational system because they score well on standardized tests.

Fact: China and Singapore are very low on indices of innovation and creativity.
    • High test scores are inversely related to high levels of creativity and innovation. Merely 473 innovations from China were recognized by the world’s leading patent offices outside China in 2008 versus 14,399 from the United States. (Zhao, 2012).
    • Other indicators of happiness/prosperity/creativity are also inversely related to high test scores (Baker, 2007).

A noted expert on Asia predicted at the World Economic Summit: “The next Apple, the next Google will come, but probably not in China, at least not in the 100 years . . .If China wants (to have an Apple or Google), it must rebuild its education system.”
Another expert states: “Standardized, narrow, and uniform educational experiences, high-stakes standardized testing, (and) a push for conformity . . .  are . . . identified in China and Singapore’s education system for destroying the nations’ creativity and entrepreneurial spirits” (Zhao, 2012).

Steve Wozniak from Apple said of rigid systems like Singapore, “When you’re very structured almost like a religion . . . Uniforms, uniforms, uniforms . . . everybody is the same. Look at structured societies like Singapore where bad behavior isn’t tolerated. You are extremely punished. Where are the creative people? Where are the great artists? Where are the great musicians? Where are the great singers? Where are the great writers? Where are the athletes? All the creative elements seem to disappear” (BBC, 2011).
The highest performing nations on the tests (China, Singapore, India, Korea) are moving away from constant testing and rigid structure while the U.S., with the Common Core assessments are diving headlong into old methods that will kill innovation.
In fact, an educational “superstar”, Finland, has NO assessment program until the end of high school, shorter school days and a 3 month break in summer, and very little homework. Furthermore, school is not compulsory until age 7! (Hendrickson, 2012). In addition, the national curriculum is not used to roll spindle and mutilate students and teachers through punitive assessments. The nation has a very “hands-off” attitude toward individual schools and understands that individual customization of curriculum and independence of teachers and schools creates the best results overall (Hendrickson, 2012).
  • After an average level of educational achievement is attained, further emphasis on tests is counterproductive to innovation (Baker, 2007).
“Among high-scoring nations, a certain level of educational attainment, as reflected in test scores, provides a platform for launching national success, but once that platform is reached, other factors become more important than further gains in test scores. Indeed, once the platform is reached, it may be bad policy to pursue further gains in test scores because focusing on the scores diverts attention, effort, and resources away from other factors that are more important determinants of national success.” (Baker, 2007)
Myth 4: We should embark on a national, top-down restructuring of educational standards such as Goals 2000, Outcome-Based Education, No Child Left Behind and the Common Core Standards to improve our scores and thus future prosperity.
Are you kidding?
Fact: National Standards in themselves do not determine student excellence. Both the highest and lowest performing nations have national standards. National standards/programs don’t correlate with high achievement on international testing.
But what does make a difference?
Unique state standards do make a difference in student achievement when combined with other layers of teacher requirements, moderate levels of subject mastery assessments and customizable programs for individual students. Massachusetts had a true state-led effort to craft excellent standards and supports. This process was transparent and involved years of public debate and input before a consensus was reached. The results were the envy of the rest of the U.S. and, even with the disparate SES, managed to compare favorably on international tests with the highest performing students in the world.
Using the 50 states as individual laboratories, each state and even each district can learn from the successes and failures of the others. An excellent example of this process is our neighbor to the north, Canada.
When international testing commenced, Canada occupied the middle of the pack, similar to the U.S. They have about 24% of students who are immigrants. But within a few decades, Canada was able to shoot to the top tier, while the U.S. remained stuck. What did Canada do? Did they fund a federal department of education, impose a draconian, coast-to-coast set of uniform standards, assessments and eventually curricula?
No, they did not (Edwards, 2013).
In fact, Canada’s educational system is much less structured than ours. They don’t have a national department of education or provide any federal funding. Each separate province (similar to States) is very competitive with the other provinces and seeks through a process of competition to quickly innovate and implement strategies which make real differences for students (Macleans, 2010). The gains have been real and well-documented by research. This kind of real evidence is what should drive educational decisions—not the machinations of special interests, crony governmentalism, and federal bribes from the Department of Education.
With monolithic national standards, students are effectively trapped with nowhere to escape for a better education. Unless they move to Canada.

Common Core Standards ignore recent research in neuroscience
Science/Research findings are of limited value and can be biased. If the findings of a particular study don’t sound intuitively correct, be very skeptical. Poor science has been used in the past to justify very harmful practices.
Example of the limits of Science: Marasmus
In the early part of the 20th century babies in orphanages were dying at an alarming rate. Scientists were flummoxed. They called the fatal disease “Marasmus” (Montagu & Matson 1979). Assuming the mortality rate was due to bacteria, they prescribed strict separation for the babies from touching or contact. Only ultra-hygenic feeding and diapering were allowed with no extra handling.
The babies continued to die as if in a plague.
Finally, some bright soul decided to start cuddling and hugging the babies. They stopped dying and started thriving. “Marasmus” was nothing more than the deprivation of attention and love (Stout, 2005).
Programs like Common Core Standards may be the “marasmus” of the 21st century. Will our children have to suffer because of badly researched programs?

  • CC is based on old motivational science from the 1910s and 1930s with B.F. Skinner.
  • He studied “stimulus-response” patterns to learn how to manipulate animals and people.
  • A Skinnerian Box
  • Skinner developed ways to train people and animals through the coercion of punishments and rewards.
  • He even had his own baby daughter in a glass box crib for the first years of life although he said the contraption was a solution to keep her warm without bedclothes (Snopes, 2014)

Problems with using punishments and rewards as motivation
  • External reinforcers tend to lose effectiveness over time
  • External reinforcers usually take significant time/effort to administer properly
  • External reinforcers are often expensive
  • External reinforcers often leave subjects feeling manipulated and dependent on external control
  • External reinforcers abrogate freedom
  • External rewards tend to diminish intrinsic motivation (Timms, 2013)
Current Neuroscience finds that human learning occurs best in loving relationships

Unlike factory production methods from the 1910s, recent findings from neuroscience support the idea that relationships foster better, faster and more permanent learning for children (Cozolino, 2013).
Stressors from Common Core Assessments can interfere with two important types of learning
  • Cognitive learning: Facts, procedures, memory, etc.
  • Emotional learning: Interpreting others intent, expressing and identifying feelings, self-soothing, risk-taking, etc.
Common Core over-testing creates anxiety
Common Core Assessment partners SBAC and PARC add even more testing than NCLB requires at present. In addition their tests are longer and the consortiums encourage interim testing 2 or 3 times during the year besides the year-end test-weeks. In addition, these tests will be used improperly to decided teacher evaluation and sometimes pay, school rankings, child-progress and possibly even graduation (FairTest, 2014).

Common Core over-testing creates an environment of “conditions of worth”
Children need to feel intrinsically loved and valuable. Failure at tests, and even the testing itself can stress even the most resilient children. The are convinced that their worth is based on their performance.
Vulnerable children respond negatively to even normal stressors
  • Children who have been abused, neglected or traumatized often display alarming responses to stress– especially outside of a safe, loving relationship. (Cozolino, 2013; Adams, 2014).
  • Studies show that mammals and human that experience little nurturing in early childhood result in lower abilities to emotionally regulate themselves. (Raabe & Spengler, 2013)

  • Epigenetic studies show how the relational stress of maternal deprivation or early trauma creates genetic changes in protein synthesis resulting in the failure to uptake cortisol. This results in longer periods of distress to smaller triggers. (University of Utah, 2014; Weaver et. al, 2004)
Common Core Will Widen the Achievement Gap and Hurt the Most Vulnerable Children.
  • 20% of students in school have a “serious” mental/emotional condition that could receive a DSM diagnosis (NIH, 2013)
  • Examples: Depression, anxiety, bi-polar disorder, suicidality, self-mutilation, addictions, obsessions, compulsions, panic disorder, reactive attachment disorder, phobias, oppositional defiant disorder, ADHD, trichotillomania, etc.
  • Sexual and other abuse is not rare. Approximately 20% of girls and 10% of boys have been sexually abused and have many resulting emotional, cognitive and behavioral problems. (Bolen, 1999)
  • Many more students have experienced physical/emotional abuse and neglect and other traumatizing factors which create problems for learning (Childhelp, 2014; Adams, 2014)

Traumatized children are the most vulnerable of all
Common Core Doesn’t Allow for Individualized Needs of Traumatized Children:
  • Healing relationships first (Adams, 2014)
  • Development of neglected neural modalities
  • Relief from assessments which can create anxiety, depression and avoidance symptoms
The following harms are predictable
  • The most vulnerable children will fall further behind the rest of the students.
  • The achievement gap will widen (Adams, 2014)
  • Vulnerable children will react more dramatically
Expect More
  • Expect more mental disorders
  • Expect more anti-social behavior
  • Expect more school shootings
  • Expect more self-harming and suicides

How Should We Be Teaching Vulnerable Children?
With conditions of supportive relationships and few other resources, even traumatized students will tend to blossom (Cozolino, 2013, Adams, 2014).
Marva Collins taught “unteachable” inner city students in her home with practically no resources and they learned Shakespeare in third grade! Why? She first established a relationship! “I don’t care how much you know until I know how much you care”  (Cozolino, 2013)

Relationships are Better Motivators Than Material Rewards
Children will perform better because of a relationship (I want my teacher to be proud of me!) more than for material rewards (I earned a candy bar!). Psychic rewards tend to be more powerful than material rewards.
Optimal Brain Development Requires Early Activation of Many Learning Modes
  • Visual processing: drawing, painting, animation, and art appreciation, optical illusions, Where’s Waldo, video games.
  • Auditory processing: foreign language, music, reading aloud, being read to, singing
  • Emotional centers: identifying emotions, reading emotions on others, self-soothing strategies, emotional expression in safe environment (drama)
  • Spatial/movement processing centers: building/manipulating objects, dance, sports, games, puzzles, cursive handwriting
  • Memory centers: short term memory, long-term memory

Common Core Neglects Many Brain Modalities
  • Common Core focuses huge amounts of time developing the left, prefrontal cortex activities in children to the neglect of other modalities. This will result in later difficulties in synthesis required for higher order thinking tasks such as creativity, innovation, critical analysis, perseverance in the face of opposition, etc. (Young & Doidge, 2013).
Common Core Reduces Experience with Literature
Common Core’s mandates for informational texts over literature deprive student’s brains of context (relationships). Stories/narratives foster larger areas of brain activation and memory activation than dry facts (Cozolino, 2013) Kids tell stories for a reason. The context gives meaning and meaning signals to the brain to remember (Cozolino, 2013)
Literature teaches both cognitive and emotional skills that informational texts can’t teach
One of the most important mental health purposes of education is to teach children to be empathetic, kind, to delay gratification and to become sensitive to their internal self-talk (conscience). Literature can assist with this through social learning. If these skills are not developed, the child becomes a heartless “clever devil” or as C.S. Lewis described, “Men without chests.” (People with active intellects and libido, but no heart or compassion). More admirable literature, not less, is what is need for children’s resilience.

Common Core Assessments Violate Student Privacy and Professional Ethics
Hundreds of assessment points on students and parents have been authorized by the DOE  (NCES 2014) including substance abuse, record of child protective services, illnesses, affiliations, etc. These are information points which in the medical or mental health profession would be protected by HIPAA regulations.
New FERPA Changes Violate Privacy
Because the Obama administration made significant, executive changes to FERPA, student information can now be accessed by corporations, school personnel or any other entity that the state approves.

Trained professionals would be heavily fined or punished under the same circumstances
If doctors or psychologists did this, they would be fined at least $100,000 for each instance. And they could lose their license because of breach of confidentiality.
Why can the government get away with this violation?
Common Core is Completely Untested
Common Core Standards are completely untested experimentally yet are being inflicted on virtually every student in the entire U.S. from K-12 with NO PREVIOUS TESTING. This is an egregious violation of basic ethics and good science and shows the developers’ absolute disregard or ignorance of potential harms to children. The EPA conducts more testing for the food dyes in Kool-Aid than has been conducted on Common Core which kids will live with for 8 hours a day for 12 years.
No Hard Evidence Supports Common Core
Unlike other professions, educational bureaucrats are not using “evidence-based practices.”
Instead of funding yet another untested scheme, we must demand “Evidence-based Education”.
Show us the evidence FIRST.
Common Core Aligned Curriculum Provides Validation for Radical Lessons Which Can Harm Children.
CC alignment makes it more difficult for parents to challenge because the administrator appeals to the authority of the standards, “But it’s Common Core aligned!” However, the developers are careful to distance themselves from curriculum development so they can’t be held responsible for damaging lessons. We as parents can’t let them have it both ways. Either the Standards are RESPONSIBLE for the curriculum that is validated by “alignment” or they shouldn’t allow the label “Common Core Aligned.”

My H1N1 Log Part-1

It’s been close to 2 months now and I am trying to weigh the pros and cons of sharing  my experiences on a blog ,I finally thought I should and do so with little bit caution and greater responsibility. More importantly I could thank all those you stood by me, so here I go
(H1N1 influenza virus)




June 29-30

With the weather in Bangalore turning dull wet and cold as ever, seasonal variations meant the weather was ideal for air born infections and I was no expectation to catch a common cold. With a fixation of self medication that’s to typical I remember popping vicks and crocin. With sore throat I decided to stay back at home and take a much needed break from work. While I felt ok 2 days were enough for me to head back to office, with the thought that week end was couple of days away I went back feeling normal.

July 14-15

My common cold returned back and I rued myself to the fact of not going to doc and unnecessarily getting it back, I felt tiredness that’s commonly associated with cold. I dragged myself till 15th once I had a mild fever meant I took one more crocin to bring back things to normal which it did to a good extent

July 16-17 first signs

I woke on 16th morning with the worst cough I had in my life, neither was the flem coming out nor was syrup making any difference. By Saturday evening my mild fever returned, with a temple visit due on 18th morning got me worried to an extent that I finally ventured out to find a local poly clinic nearby. Before I could say anything to that doc he injected me with an antibiotic on my hips, along with few tabs to pop again. I must say I hate tab since childhood until one day my wife taught me how to swallow a tab lol J (that’s possibly the last smile on my write-up), not that I like now but saves me from looking like a kid when it comes to taking medicine. With all the medication I went back to sleep hoping that I would be normal for the next day.

July 18th not good

I woke up with no change to my health; heavy cough and a running temperature   I take a call to go ahead with temple visit. With sun beating over head coming as a surprise I could not take the heat with running fever and cough I broke from the line when I felt like fainting. A rather sorry episode for me personally that I could not take a dharshan. We headed back home, unable to bare the uneasiness I head back to a bigger hospital this time (Columbia Asia).We came back with a new course of medicines.

July 18th Night to remember

It all began in the evening when my body temperature finally started to behave like Sensex. What started like a common 101 degree started to climb by the hour, even a wet cloth on my fore head didn’t help and my temp went from 101 to 105.4 by midnight, my wife had to be awake all night. With temperature showing no signs I finally became more worried that anytime I had been; for once I stopped closing my eyes with a dreadful thought that I would not wake up again. With my wife in constant touch with the doc’s and medication it was finally decided and with my close friend Naveen coming to my place(this dear friend and Asrto guru of mine didn't even think twice to give me a shoulder and put me in his car) I was taken to Columbia Asia hospital around 3 or 4 am.

July 19th Mixed day

Having lost my sleep  the previous night I finally had a very good sleep in an emergency ward, not sure what  the doc’s did to me but when I woke up by afternoon I felt good at least  my temperature was down. I was discharged with a doc’s asking me to look out on temperature and a new set of medicines.

July 20-21 preparing for worse

The temperature and cough simply refused to go down on 20th and I was back to hospital on 21st morning and went straight to my favourite emergency ward, by now for few docs and nurses I was a familiar face now. One of them finally decided to refer me to an infection specialist, on close inspection of a chest x-ray I was found to have an earlier stage of pneumonia with infection in lower lungs that was one of the culprit in my severe throat infection and a cough.

Smart move by the doc

One of the most defining moment in my treatment and possibly a wise one to prevent a worse, on close consultation the doctors arrived at a view that I have a strong symptoms of H1N1 and the advice was to treat me as a disease carrier and start off the treatment immediately. With no immediate availability of bed in hospital I had to be sent home for few hours till I get one.

Friends will always be friends

With the news spreading to my colleges at works place, some of them came rushing to meet me at home, and I tried my best to ask them to stay as far as possible from me. My scare was that I could invariably end up spreading the disease and also a possibility of my office shutdown

Hari and Vijay simply refused to let me stay alone and took the biggest risk of their lives. Especially Vijay who was expecting his first child ran the most risk of taking H1N1 to his entire family. Both are thick skinned of sorts

I am not sure what I should call Hari as a friend, brother or a father figure he played all those roles very well, no wonder TeamLease loves him more than anyone else in the entire organization.
Both of them along with my wife finally took me to hospital around afternoon to have me admitted. After 35 long years of my life this was the first time ever that I was getting admitted in a hospital.


My H1N1 Log Part-2

July 21-24 putting up the fight

Unexpected challenges in life can sometime throw people off guard, that’s Gods way to make human beings humble as possible. I remember last year around same time when H1N1 was at its peak I felt media overhyped and felt it could never happen; here I was with a strong suspect on H1N1.
With morning jab tests samples sent to NIMHANS it was going to be a long wait of 3 to 4 days for results’ had to undergo this uncertain days ahead.

Till 21st evening my stay at hospital was annoying one, with none of the doc’s visiting me I was getting more impatient over the delays in start of my treatment. My late evening I had it enough and asked one of the specialists why there was a delay especially when I am suspected to carry H1N1.
Finally at about 9 PM a nurse came with a huge tray full of intervenes injections and few tabs. Though in a pretty bad shape I was relieved to see Tami flue (The only drug used to treat).

As I lay in the bed it was a long night for me ,the long age old debate of who has the mental strength between men and women was amply proved beyond doubt ,not that I didn’t  believe .Ever  since I fell ill the only person who  stood like a rock beside me was my wife it was close to 48 hrs that she had gone without sleep ,in spite of she herself having a severe cough she continued to run around the hospital and do all the possible things that even men would be put to shame.

With a decision taken not to inform my family and relatives to avoid panic meant very few people knew what was happening. My mother in law also joined us in hospital to take care of me. My wife uncle and aunt also help us in getting my favorite food cooked at their home. With no restriction on diet I was free to have a decent food, besides hospital food was getting bored so I opted for home food instead.

22nd July proved to be my toughest day for me ,with so many injections I reached a point where I had to literally beg people around me to stop my treatment ,the pain of intervenes medication was simply too unbearable. Worse my water intake was almost close to nil from a recommended 3 to 4 liters. Nothing tasted well even water looked and tasted like medicine.

23rd  to 24th July  were a clear signal for me that I was on road to recovery and my worry shifted primarily on my wife and mother in law. While I was in safe hands and undergoing treatment the rest were in all possibility infected with virus and worse they were not even on medication. For once I felt criminal of me to put my loved ones in danger; on the other hand they simply refused to leave me alone.

With temperature under control and ever improvement in vital parameters the decision was taken to discharge me in the evening. Just before leaving a nurse walked into our room and gave a pleasant surprise that my tests on H1N1 was negative. Happy news in a long time and as a precautionary measure I had to get my family vaccinated. We returned home relieved and happy. In more than 10 days I was completely cutoff from external worlds and was eager to call everyone and catch up with all.

A phone call that changed everything

It was about 8:30 when I had finished called every soul telling aloud that was tests were negative and all of them need not worry, my wife receives a call from hospital and a cross verification call asking my patient number, what began as a routine call turned into a crises of sorts when my wife was told that I had indeed tested positive and was required for me to go into a immediate home quarantine. Worse my wife was also infected and all of them required to be isolated with face mask on.

Even the house maid would be barred from coming into house. Two years back we were severely critized for building a 4 bedroom house when my mom stayed back in home town it was felt it was too big for just both of us. Well at least in this hour of crisis that was the best as doc’s instructed all of them stayed in separate rooms locked with face mask on.

I felt Iike I was jailed in my own home ,I had to stay ,eat, sleep in the same room till my tami flue treatment was over and with my wife and her mom starting the treatment it was going to be a long drawn out affair.

My panic didn’t stop here just ,I started calling all my friends who came in contact with me ,over the next few days at least 5 of my friends when through the mandatory tests and they too had to start the treatment with tami flue. Considering the gravity of the situation the measures was a wise move when one of my close friends also tested positive; luckily in time medication meant he was fully recovered possibly ahead of me.

With my home virtually quarantined once it was left for Hari to bring in the essentials form market and leave it at door step, must say he was too brave.

25th July to 3rd Aug slow and steady wait to recover

Right medication level headed and a calm approach to handle the situation was the need of the hour all of us at home understood this with equal maturity. Over the course of one week I used this break to research android OS it kept me going without having to think of my jail sentence.

Over the week end the doc’s finally gave us consent to break the home quarantine, was extremely thrilled felt like mad wanted to run around and even venture outside. The doc’s advice meant I was not supposed to go out.

4th Aug   back to where I belong

It was time for me to go back to work ,strangely I was not sure for what reason but felt a whole lot nervous going to office it was as if a first day in a new school not sure what to expect. My drive to office in a car was like breeze floating in air of sorts not sure of the controls.

With sizable weight lost during the entire period of ill health, I felt very good about myself I had achieved such a good weight loss that even my exercise of 1 year could not achieve.

Walking up 2 stairs for my work place

I tried to test my lungs strength by choosing to walk 2 floors up ,by the time I reached my place I had run out of breath ,this was not a case of weakness but the side effects  of my lungs infection where my lungs are contracted a bit and once in a while they are starved of oxygen. Even my long calls during conference calls used to throw me off gear. Yoga is the only way out I am told and a recovery cycles are at least 3 to 4 months.

I was pleasantly surprised or rather embarrassed when my entire team came up to me and just stood without saying a word. It was so nice of them they said it all without having to say anything .i smiled back and ran to a meeting that was scheduled.

Ever since then it’s been a slow recovery, have become a cleanliness freak of sorts after this. My over all experience has been a humbling one. Tough in the end it didn’t prove life threatening      

The understanding in medical world on H1N1 is very conflicting and a divided one, while lot agree this to be a pandemic having a typical period of 2 years for viral to subside worldwide. The effectiveness of vaccines is also not guaranteed by the doctors. Most of the infected patients wouldn’t even know and it manifests as a common flue and comes out with full recovery.

I am told only in complicated cases will the virus strike be fatal, more importantly timely detection and treatment is key to bring virus infection under control.

In the end to sum it all, more than me not being well it was the love and care I got from my family and friends, staring with my wife Viji, mom in law,Akash-dad,Akash-mom,Akash, Naveen, Hari & Vijay thank you for being there through the thick and thin. You all made my recovery fast and not once you made me realize that i was in trouble

Although I did really enjoy the film, which was surprising as I haven't cared for most of Pixar's other films (I'm in the minority, I know), I agree with your points.I would have loved more female characters--I get pretty tired of the kick-butt independent heroine who seems to never interact with any women, especially never having any female friends. But I did absolutely love that it was a mother-daughter story, those are exceptionally rare in animated film, it's always about the father. If we get a mother, she's usually dead fairly quickly or absent, or the evil step-mother (Aristocats one of the few exceptions to that rule with Disney). And above all, I loved that this wasn't a romance. Trying to come up with an animated film with a teenager/adult woman protagonist that doesn't end in romance, Mrs Frisby and the Rats of Nimh and Monsters vs Aliens are the only other two I can think of besides Brave. Possibly the Secret World of Arrietty, although there seems to be some hints of romance between her and the human boy. Surely this can't be that rare, but I can't think of any others.

Creates Largest Source of Autism Research Data to Date

NEW YORK, N.Y. (DECEMBER 12, 2011) – Autism Speaks – North America’s largest autism science and advocacy organization – joins the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in announcing the addition of Autism Speaks Autism Genetic Resource Exchange (AGRE) as a data federation site for the National Database for Autism Research (NDAR).  The addition of AGRE data will help create the largest multidisciplinary source of autism research data to date. NDAR, supported by the NIH, brings together many different data resources and allows researchers to pool larger datasets for their research. This multidisciplinary repository contains genetic, phenotypic, clinical, and medical imaging data related to autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and supports standards for collaboration and data sharing among researchers. AGRE currently houses genetic materials as well as detailed medical, developmental, morphological, demographic, and behavioral information from multiplex families who have more than one child on the autism spectrum. Over the last 14 years, AGRE has helped to set the standard for collaboration and data sharing in the field.  AGRE joins the Autism Speaks Autism Tissue Program (ATP), the Kennedy Krieger Institute’s Interactive Autism Network (IAN), and the NIH Pediatric MRI Data Repository in the NDAR federation.

“Integration of AGRE and ATP data into the NDAR federation will accelerate the pace of autism research allowing research to proceed faster, more efficiently and cost effectively,” explained Autism Speaks Vice President of Clinical Programs, Clara Lajonchere, Ph.D. “More importantly, this robust source of data will allow researchers to do what they do best, concentrate on the science rather than expend time and resources on family recruitment and data collection.”

“As an organization that raises money to support research through the extraordinary efforts of hundreds of thousands of families and volunteers at hundreds of Walk Now for Autism events across North America each year, this opportunity to participate in a collaboration that will facilitate autism research on an even larger scale while cutting costs is invaluable,” added Chief Science Officer Geraldine Dawson, PhD. “To the extent that research efforts may consume fewer dollars as a result of NDAR, our resources can go to support additional researchers and projects.”

AGRE brings its unique collection of clinical, medical and genetic data from 2500 families including parents, siblings and children with ASD to this collaboration, and more than 11,000 DNA bio specimens. Approved NDAR users can apply for access to data from AGRE, as well as the 25,000 research participants represented in NDAR and more than 7,500 participants who reported their own information to IAN.

“The collaboration between AGRE and NDAR exemplifies the efforts of government and stakeholders working together for a common cause,” said Thomas R. Insel, M.D, director of the National Institutes of Mental Health (NIMH). “NDAR continues to be a leader in the effort to standardize and share ASD data with the research community, and serves as a model to other research communities.”

NDAR’s mission is to facilitate data sharing and scientific collaboration on a broad scale, providing a shared common platform for autism researchers to accelerate scientific discovery. In creating a federation of data repositories, investigators are able to access data, tools, and computational techniques in NDAR and other major public and private autism databases simultaneously. By integrating results from multiple sources, NDAR provides a rich data set for multiple uses, such as data mining, aggregation, and views into the data supporting research publications.

Over the past two years, Autism Speaks has constructed the data management infrastructure which enables both the AGRE and ATP data to be integrated into NDAR. That work was supported by NIMH grants totaling approximately $1.25 million. In addition, NDAR is funded by the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), and the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS).

          La Ruta maritima del norte        
Tras poco mas de 35 an-os (las observaciones comenzaron a realizarse desde 1979) el espesor y la superficie del hielo maritimo en el Artico se han reducido significativamente habiendose alcanzado el minimo absoluto, en terminos de superficie, en septiembre de 2012, con solo 3,410,000 km2.

Cobertura de mar congelado (en al menos un 15%) en las aguas del Artico entre septiembre y enero. 
Se compara la media climatologica, para el periodo 1981-2010, con 2015 e inicios de 2016 (trazados en azul) y 2012-2013 (trazado discontinuo).

Esto no significa de modo alguno que en las proximas decadas el Artico pudiera estar descubierto de hielo por completo pero si que en temporada de verano podria estar desprovisto de el, algo de lo cual no se tiene registro en los ultimos 700 mil an-os. A pesar de lo anterior, no existe consenso a partir de cuando esto podria concretarse. Segun un informe de 2007 del Grupo intergubernamental de expertos del cambio climatico hacia 2070  las aguas del Artico estarian completamente descubiertas de hielo en el periodo de verano pero otras investigaciones han mencionado como fecha posible para tal fenomeno 2035 e incluso 2020.

Junto con la inquietud que provoca un escenario como el descrito la ausencia de hielo en el Artico en temporada estival podria abrir nuevas rutas para la navegacion, algo que resulta de especial relevancia si se considera que la comunicacion entre Europa y Asia por el Artico podria verse especialmente facilitada por la significativa reduccion que se produciria en terminos de la distancia y el tiempo de navegacion entre ambos continentes.

De realizarse, el hecho concretaria viejos anhelos de navegantes ingleses y holandeses quienes, desde el siglo XVI en adelante, buscaron infructuosamente una ruta entre Europa y los mercados asiaticos que les permitiera ir hasta el Oriente sorteando las rutas vigentes entonces, las que estaban todas bajo control de otras naciones. Asi, el Estrecho de Magallanes, estaba dominado por los espan-oles y el Cabo de Buena Esperanza, por los portugueses, quienes tenian el control militar y monopolico de esas vias maritimas dejando como unica alternativa valerse de la ruta terrestre que iba a traves de territorios dominados por turcos y persas y que implicaba la realizacion de grandes pagos, lo que mermaba las ganancias por la venta de productos y articulos de Asia en los mercados de Europa.

El interes hacia la India y China y por las rutas que condujeran hasta Asia se incremento sustancialmente luego del viaje por tierra de fines del siglo XIII de Marco Polo (imagen superior) quien hablaria de los reinos y maravillas de Oriente. 

En 1453 las rutas por tierra al Oriente serian cerradas por los turcos otomanos que se hicieron de Constantinopla por lo que Europa se vio forzada a buscar una ruta por mar, lo que lograria Vasco da Gama al descubrir el Cabo de Buena Esperanza, en el sur de Africa. Pero al mismo tiempo la busqueda iria tambien en direccion suroeste lo que permitiria al portugues al servicio del Rey de Espan-a, Fernao de Magalhaes, descubrir el Estrecho de Magallanes a fines de 1520.
El Cabo de Buena Esperanza seria descubierto por el portugues Bartolomeu Dias en 1488 en la busqueda de una ruta que lo llevara hacia la India, sin embargo, solo lograria salir al Indico regresando hacia el Oeste. Quien por primera vez cruzaria la misma ruta pero llegando hasta la India seria el tambien portugues Pero da Covilha, quien llego en noviembre de 1488 a la ciudad de Calicut.

Resultaria toda una proeza para la navegacion la apertura del Canal de Suez en 1869, pues permitiria finalmente la comunicacion maritima entre Europa y Asia por una ruta mas corta que aquella a traves del Cabo de Buena Esperanza. Asi, este nuevo hito de la ingenieria de la epoca implicaba que los cerca de 30 mil km que se recorrian, por ejemplo, en la ruta de Hamburgo a Shangai, se reducian en 1/3 de esa cifra.

Hoy, el calentamiento global, nos esta poniendo en el umbral de una nueva epoca para la navegacion entre Occidente y Oriente al prometernos disminuir aun mas esa distancia, abreviada tanto por el Canal de Suez como por el Canal de Panama*, reduciendo la distancia citada entre Hamburgo y Shangay desde cerca de 20 mil km a unos 14 km al ir por el Artico.
*Abierto oficialmente a la navegacion el 12 de junio de 1920.

Pero ademas de facilitar la navegacion entre Asia y Europa, la apertura de una ruta maritima en territorios otrora dominados por los hielos podria tambien ayudar a la extraccion de recursos naturales mas alla del Circulo polar, ya sea desde el subsuelo del Artico o de territorios del norte de Rusia en que se carece de infraestructura adecuada para el transporte por tierra y donde, de hecho, esa via maritima se utiliza con ese fin desde hace varias decadas.

Las rutas que abre la eventual desaparicion del hielo en la frontera sur del Artico se plantearon en un principio de modo teorico, desde hace siglos, por lo que tienen denominaciones estandarizadas. Se trata del Paso del Noroeste (abajo en rojo) y del Paso maritimo del Norte (a continuacion en gris), el que hasta inicios del siglo XX se conocio como Paso del Noreste.

El Paso del Noroeste fue atravesado por primera vez por el explorador noruego Roald Amundsen entre 1903-1906. Amundsen, entre otras proezas, seria tambien la primera persona en llegar al Polo Sur, lo que concreto en 1911.

El mapa superior permite apreciar en blanco la cobertura de mar congelado en octubre de 2013, lo que deja en claro que estamos tratando aqui de una ruta maritima solo de verano sobre todo si se considera que el maximo de la superficie de mar congelado se alcanza en esta zona del Artico no en octubre sino en marzo.

Como permite apreciar el primero de los mapas superiores el Paso del Noroeste pertenece casi en su totalidad a las aguas territoriales del Canada y une por via maritima los oceanos Atlantico y Pacifico mientras que el Paso maritimo del Norte forma parte de las aguas territoriales de la Federacion rusa y comunica Asia con Europa. La condicion de hielo de ambos pasos maritimos es mucho menos compleja por la via maritima rusa por lo que se la ve con mayores perspectivas desde la consideracion de una retirada significativa de la cobertura de hielo de verano en el futuro. De hecho, en toda su historia, el Paso del Noroeste, que podria presentarse como un eventual sustituto al transito por el Canal de Panama, ha permitido apenas la navegacion de unas 40 embarcaciones, la mayoria rompehielos.


El Paso del Noreste, como se le conocio hasta inicios del siglo XX, hoy Ruta Maritima del Norte (SMP en adelante) se extiende a lo largo de las costas del norte de Rusia por los mares del Oceano Artico: Barents, Kara, Laptev, Siberia oriental, Chukotka y Bering uniendo los puertos de la Rusia europea con el extremo oriental del pais.

Si se quiere comprender su significado en terminos solo de distancia podemos ver que desde San Petersburgo hasta Vladivostok por la SMP hay cerca de 14 mil km mientras que si se recorre la misma ruta por el sur, por ejemplo a traves del Canal de Suez, la cifra crece hasta mas de 23 mil km y alcanza casi 30 mil km si el desplazamiento se produce a traves del Cabo de Buena Esperanza.

Pero la ruta del norte sirve tambien al desarrollo interno de Rusia, que cuenta con una gran extension de territorio en el norte, pues permite conectar esas regiones con el resto del pais, especialmente gracias a los rios navegables de Siberia que constituyen un sistema de transporte nacional unificado pues desembocan en las aguas del Artico. La extension de esas vias fluviales navegables adyacentes al SMP es cercana a los 37 mil km.
Algunos de los rios mas importante que cruzan el pais de sur a norte en el territorio situado al este de los Urales. 

Sin embargo, debe tenerse presente que la Ruta maritima del norte no es solo una mera linea imaginaria a traves del Artico sino tambien toda una red inmensa y onerosa de infraestructura de puertos, de servicios maritimos, aereos y terrestres de informacion del estado del hielo y del tiempo, de servicios de busqueda y rescate como de prevencion y contencion de accidentes ademas de incluir el servicio de rompehielos y otros tipo de asistencias a la navegacion, a lo que deben sumarse reglamentos de operacion y cuerpos legales nacionales e internacionales que regulan su actividad, junto con todo un sistema de cobros por cruzar la ruta y acceder a esos servicios. Adicionalmente, el conjunto de rios adyacentes a la Ruta del norte y que desembocan en el Artico se suman a la extension de la Ruta misma cuando se constituye como una via de comunicacion interna entre el oeste y el este de Rusia.

El SMP es la principal via navegable y el principal sistema de transporte de Rusia en el Artico y permite unir los puertos de Europa y del Lejano Oriente. 

Cuando se observa la extension de la linea costera de Rusia en el Artico podemos comprender la importancia que puede tener para la comunicacion y el desarrollo de esa zona del pais la existencia de una ruta maritima desprovista de hielo que comunique el oeste del pais con su extremo oriental, especialmente si se tiene en consideracion la ausencia o poco desarrollada red de comunicaciones terrestres en ese sector de Rusia y la presencia de una red ferroviaria, integrada de oeste a este, situada muy lejos, hacia el sur.


Junto con esa importancia en terminos de comunicacion interna el desarrollo en pleno de una red de navegacion artica ademas permitiria a Rusia el control de espacios maritimos potencialmente ricos en recursos naturales de la costa artica y tambien obtener ventajas economicas y geopoliticas de un potencial crecimiento relevante del transito de carga transnacional por la ruta del SMP entre puertos europeos y del Oceano Pacifico.

La ventaja principal del SMP en terminos de transporte es la reduccion del tiempo de viaje, pues permite reducir significativamente el desplazamiento entre los puertos del norte y del oeste de Europa con aquellos del este asiatico, tanto de oeste a este como viceversa. Asi, por ejemplo, la ruta desde Rotterdam (Holanda) hasta Yokohama (Japon) a traves del Canal de Suez tiene una extension de 11.200 millas marinas mientras que a traves del SMP es de solo 7.300, lo que significa que en periodo de verano los gastos para el transporte a traves del SMP se reducen en cerca de un 30-35% en relacion a los costos que se generan siguiendo la ruta tradicional a traves del Canal de Suez.

Otra ventaja del transporte de carga por el SMP es la reduccion de vertidos peligrosos a la atmosfera gracias a la reduccion del tiempo de viaje lo que, ademas, genera un menor consumo de combustible.

Un plus adicional es que por esta ruta dificilmente se presentaran algun dia ataques de piratas, los que en los ultimos an-os se transformaron en una seria amenaza en la ruta del Canal de Suez, al atravesar el Mar Rojo, el Oceano Indico o el Estrecho de Malaca, en el sudeste asiatico.


Historicamente, el peak en la utilizacion de esta ruta se logro en tiempos sovieticos, cuando se valio de ella muy activamente, aunque exclusivamente como arteria de comunicacion interna, de modo que a fines de la decada de 1980 el volumen de carga transportada alcanzo casi 7 millones de toneladas anuales.

Todo cambiaria bruscamente con la desintegracion de la URSS dada la interrupcion de la financiacion estatal del transporte por el SMP, lo que llevo a que se redujera practicamente a cero. Afortunadamente, a fines de la decada de 2000 se comenzo a pensar en el Artico a alto nivel y la situacion comenzo paulatinamente a cambiar.

A pesar de todo, en la actualidad no existe consenso en relacion al futuro de este corredor maritimo, existiendo 2 posturas:

1. Una que considera el desarrollo de la Ruta maritima del norte como algo completamente real y beneficioso por sus posibilidades para el mercado interno ruso y el desarrollo de las regiones del extremo norte del pais y lo considera tambien relevante para situar a Rusia como un eje mundial del transporte entre Asia y Occidente, lo que fortaleceria su posicion geopolitica global.

2. La posicion antagonica, considera que los gastos en infraestructura necesarios para hacer del SMP una alternativa real y rentable frente a la ruta del Canal de Suez son colosales considerando, ademas, muy limitada la rentabilidad de un proyecto de esta magnitud.

Y si bien es cierto que con el fin de la URSS tanto la Ruta maritima como su infraestructura cayeron en el abandono el inicio del siglo XXI le dio nuevos brios permitiendo albergar esperanzas de un futuro mucho mas prometedor. Se pueden, al respecto, citar cifras, desde 2009 en adelante, que permitieron en algun momento alentar expectativas de que el uso del SMP iria en constante aumento.

En 2009 cruzo por el SMP un buque de transito que transportaba 20 mil toneladas de carga mientras que el 2010 lo hicieron 4 embarcaciones, lo que incremento la carga en transito hasta 110 mil toneladas.

Luego, en 2012, se produjo una brusca variacion hasta 1,27 millones de toneladas de carga presentandose un peak en 2013, con el paso de mas de 70 embarcaciones equivalentes a 1.355.897 toneladas de carga transportada lo que permitio hacer pronosticos muy optimistas, de acuerdo a los cuales hacia 2020 el volumen de transporte debia alcanzar entre 15-30 millones de toneladas anuales y hacia 2030 entre 60-70 millones de toneladas.

En noviembre de 2014 el viceministro de transporte, Sergey Aristov (imagen superior), incluso afirmaria que en el futuro "El SMP se transformara en la principal via de comunicacion entre Europa y Asia". Sin embargo, ese mismo an-o el volumen de carga transportada por la ruta cayo en 5 veces, hasta  274 mil toneladas, debido a una caida significativa en el precio del petroleo y a consecuencia de las sanciones internacionales impuestas contra Rusia tras su anexion de Crimea.

Hoy, los bajos precios del combustible permiten cruzar a traves del Canal de Suez a un costo mucho menor. Ademas, los yacimientos de hidrocarburos del Artico se volvieron mucho menos atractivos y algunas compan-ias, como Exxon-Mobil, dejaron de colaborar con Rusia. Con trabajos e investigaciones congelados la demanda de los buques se redujo significativamente. Bajo estas condiciones un conjunto de compan-ias navieras occidentales optaron por no firmar el an-o pasado contratos con firmas rusas, inclusos con aquellas no afectas a sanciones.

Para colmo, han sucedido cambios tambien en el mercado interno ruso que disminuyeron aun mas el transporte de carga por el Artico ruso.
El Canal de Suez es una via maritima sin esclusas que une el Mediterraneo con el Mar Rojo y que fue abierto a la navegacion en 1869. Cuenta con una extension de 160 km y representa el 7% del transporte de carga maritima del mundo. El Canal es la segunda fuente de ingresos de Egipto despues del turismo. 

Mas alla de la compleja coyuntura que se gesto a partir de 2014, para desarrollar la Ruta del Norte se requieren inversiones gigantescas lo que requiere de socios extranjeros, algo que en el ultimo tiempo se ha vuelto muy complejo para Rusia dado los intentos de algunos paises de Occidente, mas bien de Estados Unidos, de aislar al pais del resto de la comunidad internacional. Sin embargo, se podria contar, eventualmente, con la colaboracion de paises asiaticos, no vinculados con las sanciones internacionales contra Rusia, especialmente China, Corea del Sur, India e incluso el pequen-o Singapur, quienes manifiestan hace ya largo tiempo un gran interes por el Artico.
La participacion de socios e inversionistas extranjeros para el desarrollo de una arteria de transporte por el Norte se analizo en la cumbre de la APEC, desarrollada en 2012, en Vladivostok, Rusia, en el curso de la cual las partes analizaron las posibilidades de una colaboracion multilateral en el desarrollo de la SMP. 
Entonces, se trataba de un escenario distinto para Rusia en el campo internacional pues aun no se gestaba el conflicto en Ucrania.
Los participantes de la reunion partieron de la base de que pronto, dado el agudo aumento del volumen de cargas entre Asia y Europa, la ruta podria competir de manera exitosa con las vias maritimas del sur. 

Entre los innumerables problemas estructurales que presenta la Ruta desde hace tiempo el principal es la condicion de la infraestructura de los puertos del Artico que, con exclusion de Murmansk y parcialmente de Dudinka, no se modernizan desde 1990. Asi, de los 16 puertos ubicados por la Ruta en la actualidad solo Murmansk puede recibir embarcaciones con peso muerto de mas de 30 mil toneladas. Ademas, en la mayoria de los puertos las obras para recepcion y utilizacion de deshechos de las embarcaciones se encuentran en condicion critica, o simplemente no existen, mientras que debido a la falta de financiamiento durante muchos an-os han quedado al borde de su inutilizacion diversos sistemas de apoyo a la navegacion, como los sistema de localizacion por radio y de informacion hidrografica. Grandes dudas provocan tambien las posibilidades actuales de la flota de rescate y de accidentes.


Otra pregunta, que requiere un estudio profundo, es el pago por la escolta de un rompehielos, condicion necesaria para cruzar algunos sectores de un area maritima tan compleja como el Artico. Para las embarcaciones sin ice class* la escolta es indispensable, ya que, el encuentro con un trozo de hielo aislado o un iceberg irremediablemente terminaria en una catastrofe. Sin embargo, segun los expertos, para darle competitividad a la ruta en relacion con rutas situadas mas al sur de nuestro planeta el costo del pago por la escolta se deberia reducir en varias veces en relacion al costo actual pues sus tasas son consideradas excesivamente elevadas por las compan-ias maritimas internacionales.
*Clasificacion de las embarcaciones que operan a traves de mar congelado que establece su capacidad para sortear la presencia de hielo en el mar segun la complejidad del mismo. Se origino en 1890 en Finlandia. No existe un estandar unico para establecer ice class, variando segun cada pais, sin embargo, en agosto de 2006 la Organizacion internacional de sociedades de clasificacion (IACS) establecio 7 tipos de ice class, desde PC1 a PC7, segun su mayor a menor capacidad, respectivamente, para desplazarse en aguas polares.

A proposito del mismo tema, surge tambien la pregunta sobre la condicion de la flota de rompehielos. Hoy en la ruta del SMP operan 6 rompehielos atomicos y 9 diesel, los que si bien resultan hoy suficientes si se considera que la cantidad de embarcaciones que cruza por el SMP debiera incrementarse significativamente entonces la necesidad de rompehielos crecera tambien de forma significativa.

No se puede descartar ademas que en la actualidad el SMP no es muy atractivo para el transporte de contenedores pues, en general, estan unidos por el sistema de envio "Just in time"* y no siempre es posible predecir cuanto tiempo se requerira para cruzar el SMP, ya que, en cualquier momento pueden surgir condiciones de tiempo extremadamente complejas que incluso en el verano son capaces de introducir correcciones tanto a la ruta como al tiempo de desplazamiento. Adicionalmente, la carga transportada en contenedores, puede resultar sensible a cambios bruscos de la temperatura por lo cual, hasta ahora, los principales clientes del SMP son embarcaciones dedicadas al transporte de cargas masivas como minerales o hidrocarburos, solidos y liquidos.
*Concepto logistico (Justo a tiempo) vinculado a procesos de produccion en serie que considera la entrega de insumos en un momento determinado previamente, segun su cantidad acordada y en el lugar tambien acordado y que minimiza los gastos en bodegaje.

No se puede dejar de mencionar tampoco el aspecto juridico pues las compan-ias extranjeras ven ambiguedades en la legislacion rusa que regula la navegacion comercial por el SMP, que los hace dudar de la prioridad real que pudieran tener las normas juridicas internacionales sobre la legislacion del pais del norte. Tambien genera cierto temor los planes del gobierno ruso de multiplicar la infraestructura militar en la region artica. Y aunque, de acuerdo a una reciente declaracion del Ministro de defensa ruso, Sergey Shoygu (imagen inferior), de que esto se hace "para dar seguridad a la navegacion por el SMP" la verdad es que, entre potenciales clientes, esto provoca mas bien recelo que una sensacion de mayor seguridad.


Los escepticos frente al desarrollo del SMP destacan tambien lo que consideran gastos de operacion muy elevados, entre los cuales mencionan:

Las ya mencionadas tasas por escoltas de rompehielos, de 20-30 dolares por tonelada mientras que el costo por cruzar el Canal de Suez llega a los 5 dolares por tonelada.

Riesgos adicionales surgidos ante la dificultad de conseguir apoyo de rompehielos en el tiempo y el lugar necesarios, lo que conlleva una alta probabilidad de dan-o por hielo, situacion que genera horas improductivas en la operacion de las embarcaciones y gastos adicionales por aumento en las primas de los seguros.

Ademas, para el trabajo en el SMP se exigen aportes de capital demasiado grandes, pues se requieren buques especializados con ice class o buques-tanque con casco doble. Las embarcaciones, ademas, deben contar con equipo adicional en caso de fallas y deben ser dirigidos por oficiales preparados para el trabajo en el Artico.

Las compan-ias occidentales consideran oneroso la realizacion de formalidades burocraticas para el ingreso de embarcaciones de transito a las aguas del SMP. Se requiere entregar informacion previamente (entre 2 semanas hasta 3 meses) sobre las especificaciones de las embarcaciones, hay complejos procedimientos para recibir el permiso para acceder a la mayoria de los puertos y se debe contar con seguros de responsabilidad por posibles dan-os al medio ambiente frente a un dan-o de la embarcacion.

Por otra parte, se expresan quejas de que las tasas aduaneras y de frontera en el paso por el SMP se constituyen de manera arbitraria y, ademas, se conoce poco de las capacidades de los puertos de la Ruta para ejecutar operaciones de carga, para realizar servicios de reparaciones de embarcaciones y para tratar con accidentes.

Tampoco puede desconocerse el factor climatico. Asi, despues de un 2012 record la superficie cubierta en verano por los hielos articos de nuevo comenzo paulatinamente a incrementarse. Ademas, incluso si se supone que resulten en lo cierto los cientificos que pronostican una desaparicion del hielo en el Artico en el periodo estival con la llegada del invierno la navegacion por el SMP se tornara, de todos modos, imposible o exigira grandes costos. Hoy, la ventana para la navegacion se extiende a cerca de 3 meses, a lo sumo de 3 meses y medio.

Ademas, a lo largo de la costa, por ejemplo, en el Estrecho de Dmitri Laptev, la profundidad no permite siempre el paso a buques de gran calado lo que fuerza a llevar la navegacion mas al norte, circunstancia que acorta aun mas el posible periodo de navegacion pues mas al norte es mas frio y, por consiguiente, hay mas hielo.

Tampoco puede dejar de mencionarse que existen expertos que estan completamente seguros de que el actual calentamiento de la Tierra es un fenomeno temporal por lo que, finalmente, los hielos se volveran a imponer sobre el Artico.

De ese modo, no son menos los problemas relacionados con la conquista del SMP que las esperanzas puestas en el.

El SMP adquirira derecho a existir solo en caso de que sea mas provechoso y competitivo que las rutas existentes y si bien algunos especialistas estan seguros que el SMP podria transformarse en un real competidor para las rutas existentes actualmente esto no sera antes de 10-15 an-os. Pero entonces le sera tambien dificil oponerse al Canal de Suez, cuya administracion buscara conservar sus ventajas competitivas para lo cual estara dispuesto a realizar descuentos adicionales a sus tarifas.

Ademas, se debe comprender que como competidor al Canal de Suez, por el cual cruzan anualmente cerca de 18 mil embarcaciones, el SMP nunca alcanzara esa condicion, considerando, aun mas, que en 2015 se inauguro una segunda linea del Canal, el que se espera eleve las ganancias anuales por la operacion del Canal desde los 4-5 miles de millones de dolares anuales actuales a 13-15 miles de millones hacia 2023.

El 6 de agosto de 2015 se inauguro en el Canal de Suez un segundo canal paralelo que se espera sirva en el futuro para llevar el transporte de norte a sur mientras que el transporte de sur a norte se realizaria por el Canal antiguo, lo que permitira duplicar el numero de embarcaciones que lo atraviesan diariamente, de 49 a 97, y disminuir el tiempo de espera para cruzar el Canal a solo un 25% del tiempo actual. 

Pero todas esas criticas lapidarias tambien plantean los problemas prioritarios, que son indispensables de resolver por la administracion del SMP para llevar la ruta a estandares internacionales de navegacion maritima.

Asi, se requiere establecer en primer lugar un servicio de busqueda y rescate centralizado y de rapida reaccion, capaz de prestar ayuda en una situacion de emergencia en cualquier punto del SMP pues en las rigurosas condiciones de la region el retraso en caso de un accidente puede tener consecuencias graves para la embarcacion en si, su tripulacion, la carga y, ademas, para el medio ambiente.

Debe entregarse de modo permanente a todas las embarcaciones las condiciones meteorologicas y del hielo en todas las secciones de la ruta durante su travesia por el SMP.

En las condiciones extremas del Artico adquiere un significado especial las calificaciones del personal que trabaje en la ruta pues las tripulaciones de la mayoria de las embarcaciones extranjeras se encontraran aqui con condiciones desconocidas y muy complejas. Su trabajo exitoso dependera no solo de su experiencia y preparacion sino tambien, en no menor medida, de las calificaciones del personal de los rompehielos, de los operadores de los puertos y de otras personas, que se contactaran con quienes atraviesen por la ruta.

Ademas, se requiere una preparacion de idiomas adecuada.

Los especialistas y compan-ias extranjeras que evaluan de modo positivo el potencial del SMP plantean la necesidad de reducir al maximo los factores adicionales de riesgo. Por ello consideran que la administracion del SMP debe garantizar que cualquier embarcacion debe conseguir a tiempo un piloto para cruzar a traves de sectores riesgosos de la ruta siendo escoltado, ademas, por rompehielos.

Adicionalmente, consideran que el desplazamiento por el SMP y el ingreso a los puertos debe estar libre de proteccionismo. Es decir, embarcaciones de todas las banderas, con tripulaciones de cualquier nacionalidad deben recibir el derecho de pasar por la ruta mientras que el volumen y el orden de la prestacion de servicios deben ser identicas para todos, con independencia de la procedencia nacional del buque.

Los analistas extranjeros consideran que para adquirir ventajas competitivas en la politica de precios es mejor para la direccion del SMP establecer tasas fijas de los servicios garantizados de transito, lo que reducira significativamente el atractivo en precios de rutas alternativas.

Ademas, se deben eliminar los procedimientos burocraticos innecesarios para el acceso de las embarcaciones a la ruta y al servicio de su navegacion.

Junto con esas propuestas existen planes concretos en la Rusia actual para apoyar la utilizacion del SMP y que estan entrelazados con los planes para el desarrollo social y economico del Norte ruso y del pais en su conjunto. Estas medidas, algunas ya realizadas, suponen una renovacion de las flotas fluviales y maritimas, del parque de aviones polares y la modernizacion de los puertos del Artico.

Breve evolucion historica de la Ruta maritima del Norte

Se considera que el primero en plantear el uso de la Ruta del norte para comunicar a Rusia con Asia, concretamente con China, fue el diplomatico ruso, Dmitri Gerasimov a principios del siglo XVI, a partir de cuyo relato el cartografo italiano Battista Agnese realizo uno de los primeros mapas de las tierras rusas, en la cual se representaron algunos sectores del Oceano Artico.

Las afirmaciones de Gerasimov fueron presentadas en una obra de 1525 del sabio italiano Paolo Giovio en la que se expresaba que "si se navegaba desde el rio Dvina del norte hacia el este, manteniendo la costa a la derecha, podia llegarse hasta la frontera con China". Con el paso de los siglos quedaria demostrado que la extension del norte de Rusia era mucho mayor de lo que se estimaba a inicios del siglo XVI, cuando se pensaba que China estaba mucho mas cerca de Moscu, aunque la cartografia de Europa occidental seguiria mostrando esa distancia (la Ruta maritima del norte) como mucho menor incluso hasta mediados del siglo XVIII.

En la segunda mitad del siglo XV tanto ingleses como holandeses intentaron cruzar en mas de una ocasion la mencionada ruta. Los ingleses fundaron incluso una "Sociedad de empresarios para el descubrimiento de paises, tierras, islas, estados y posesiones desconocidas y aun no visitadas por via maritima" que permitio organizar diversas expediciones a la cuenca del Oceano Artico, una de cuyos propositos principales eran la apertura de una nueva ruta comercial hacia China pero alcanzarian solo hasta la desembocadura del Dvina del norte, la costa de Murmansk y la isla de Novaya Zemlya.



En tanto el navegante holandes Willem Barentsz (imagen superior) se dirigio en 3 ocasiones a fines del siglo XVI en esta direccion pero no pudo ir mas alla de Novaya Zemlya en sus dos primeros intentos, logrando llegar en su ultimo intento hasta el Cabo Zhelaniya (del deseo), muriendo de escorbuto* en el viaje de regreso.
*Enfermedad provocada por un fuerte deficit de vitamina C (presente en frutas y vegetales), como se demostro recien en 1932, y que comenzo a hacerse conocida en las tripulaciones de las embarcaciones que navegaban desde el siglo XIII en adelante, en especial a partir del siglo XV cuando comenzaron las grandes expediciones alrededor de la Tierra. Se considera que entre 1600-1800 murieron de escorbuto cerca de 1 millon de navegantes, lo que supera las perdidas por batallas navales en el periodo.


En el siglo XVI navegantes rusos comenzaron a navegar regularmente hasta la desembocadura del rio Ob, desde donde llegarian posteriormente hasta la cuenca del Yenisey.


Luego de la incursion del cosaco Yermak* al curso inferior del Ob se construyeron algunos poblados que servirian por largo tiempo como puertos para enviar pieles hacia Arxangelsk.
*Luego de que Rus (el antiguo Estado ruso) se libero definitivamente del yugo tartaro-mongol los rusos se lanzarian a la conquista de las regiones del este, labor en que lograria gran exito el Zar Ivan el Terrible al conquistar los xanatos tartaros de Kazan (1552) y de Astraxan (1554-1557) abriendo la posibilidad de comunicarse con India y China por via terrestre. Como parte de ese proceso de expansion hacia el oriente a fines del siglo XVI el cosaco Yermak, junto a un pequen-o destacamento de hombres, seria enviado a atacar otro territorio tartaro situado sobre Siberia y los Urales, el Xanato de Siberia. Si bien la accion tendria un resultado dispar, pues su victoria seria respondida con un contragolpe y la muerte de Yermak, marco el inicio de un vertiginoso proceso de apropiacion por los rusos de todo el territorio situado al este de los Urales, llegando hasta Alaska.


A inicios del siglo XVII los navegantes rusos llegaban con frecuencia hasta la desembocadura del rio Yenisey y hasta el rio Pyasina. Algunas decadas despues, a partir de la fundacion del poblado de Irkutsk, un grupo de cosacos navego por el rio Lena hasta su desembocadura en el Artico, donde la expedicion se dividiria en 2: Una parte navego hacia el Oeste y otra, a cargo de Ilya Perfirev, hacia el Este, lo que les permitio descubrir el rio Yana. Tiempo despues, el grupo de cosacos que partio al Oeste, al mando de Ivan Rebrov, girarian hacia el este y descubririan mas alla del Yana, la desembocadura de un nuevo rio, el Indigirka.


Los rusos alcanzarian las costas del Pacifico en 1639, cuando Ivan Moskvitin junto a un grupo de cosacos llego a la desembocadura del rio Ulya, en el Mar de Oxotsk.


En 1641 Mixail Staduxin navego desde Oymyakon corriente abajo por el Indigirka y llegaria por mar hasta la desembocadura del rio Kolyma alrededor de 1643-1644.

El descubrimiento del Estrecho de Bering



El descubrimiento de la ultima parte del sector artico de la Ruta del norte estaria vinculado a los nombres de Semion Dezhniov y Fedot Popov, quienes partiendo en 1648 en un viaje hacia el este por razones comerciales demostrarian por primera vez la existencia de un paso entre Asia y America (imagenes superiores) ademas de permitir el descubrimiento del territorio de Kamchatka y de la peninsula de Chukotka. Lamentablemente, los resultados de su viaje resultarian por completo desconocidos para el Almirantazgo como para el Zar Pedro I, quienes organizarian 50 an-os mas tarde expediciones hacia ese sector del planeta.

En 1736 el historiador aleman asentado en Rusia, Gerhard Muller, quien revisaba documentos de los archivos de la ciudad de Yakutsk, se encontro con informes que relataban la expedicion de Dezhniov-Popov los que publicaria en su obra de 1758 "Descripcion de viajes maritimos por el Oceano artico y el Mar oriental realizados por parte de Rusia" aunque se considera que realizo un muy pobre analisis del material encontrado. Petr Slovtsov, historiador de Siberia concluiria en 1838 que Dezhniov no realizo una incursion maritima en torno a Asia, deduccion errada que seria tambien respaldada por el historiador norteamericano Frank Golder, quien en sus trabajos publicados en el primer cuarto del siglo XIX refuto la incursion maritima de Dezhniov en torno al extremo nor-oriental del continente asiatico.

En la decada de 1890 se publicarian por primera vez los documentos sobre la expedicion de Dezhniov por el historiador y especialista en archivos Nikolay Ogoblin, los que contenian muchas alteraciones.

Seria finalmente Lev Berg quien realizaria un analisis escrupuloso del asunto, quien analizando toda la informacion disponible pudo concluir de manera fehaciente que Dezhniov completo una incursion por el noreste de Asia, a traves del estrecho Anianski (actual Estrecho de Bering) lo que resolvio definitivamente esta cuestion quedando solo abierto la determinacion de si sus contemporaneos lograron saber que el habia cruzado el estrecho de Bering y si esta informacion se transmitio en los decenios posteriores.

Existe mucha informacion que muestra que habia conocimiento al respecto. Asi, en 1652 se propagaron rumores en Moscu que el gobierno enviaria a 2 mil soldados a America lo que asume la existencia del paso o tambien se puede mencionar el mapa de Siberia de Petr Godunov que muestra la presencia del paso entre ambos continentes. Existe tambien informacion que confirma que los habitantes del sector nor-oriental de Asia recordaban la incursion de Dezhniov, sin embargo, a fines del siglo XVII y, especialmente, a inicios del siglo XVIII, su proeza comenzaria a quedar en el olvido. Ademas, nuevos intentos por realizar el cruce del extremo nororiental de Asia resultarian infructuosos y la cartografia comenzo a modificar su representacion de este sector de la Tierra, teniendo especial influencia el trabajo de Semion Remezov, el mas grande cartografo del siglo XVII y de inicios del siglo XVIII.

Vitus Jonassen Bering. Nacido el 12 de agosto de 1681 en Dinamarca. Seria reclutado en 1703 para el servicio de Rusia para la flota rusa por los agentes del Zar Pedro el Grande.


Pedro el Grande estaba interesado en encontrar rutas maritimas hacia China y la India ademas de incrementar la influencia de Rusia en el sector oriental del Oceano Pacifico y de alcanzar territorios de America del Norte adonde aun no lograban llegar ingleses y franceses. 

Poco antes de su muerte el Zar Pedro el Grande organizo en diciembre de 1724 la llamada I expedicion de Kamchatka la cual debia establecer la existencia de un estrecho entre Asia y America pero que tenia tambien el proposito de establecer vinculos comerciales con los paises de la cuenca del Pacifico y de descubrir y anexar nuevos territorios que contrapesaran la expansion de Inglaterra en el Pacifico. Como jefe de la expedicion se nombraria al Capitan de I rango, Vitus Bering. Sus integrantes partirian desde San Petersburgo el 24 de enero de 1725 y solo 2 an-os mas tarde alcanzarian la localidad de Oxotsk desde donde cruzarian en septiembre de 1927 hacia Kamchatka, donde en el verano de 1728 se terminaria la construccion de la embarcacion de la expedicion, el San Gabriel, en la cual partieronel 14 de julio de modo que a mediados de agosto cruzaron el estrecho que mas tarde llevaria el nombre de Bering sin que pudieran confirmar que Asia estaba separada de America. Las malas condiciones de tiempo como tambien la falta de alimentos y agua fresca ademas de una filtracion en la embarcacion convencieron a Bering de la necesidad de regresar. Al cruzar de nuevo el Estrecho no lograron avistar la costa de Alaska debido a la presencia de niebla.

Como, sin embargo, comprendia que solo se habia completado parte de su tarea, pues no habia logrado avistar la costa de America del Norte, salio de nuevo al mar en el verano de 1729 en la misma embarcacion tomando rumbo hacia el Este esperando encontrarse con las tierras de las que le hablaba la poblacion local. Sin embargo, despues de 3 dias de navegacion en que debido a los fuertes vientos y la niebla no habia navegado mas de 200 km desistio de sus intentos y cruzo Kamchatka hasta Oxotsk, adonde llego el 24 de julio.

Y si bien no se logro el proposito principal, ademas de la determinacion de la extension longitudinal de Siberia, la expedicion permitio la descripcion cartografica aproximada de la Peninsula de Chukotka y de Kamchatka y establecio que el extremo meridional de esta ultima no estaba unido a Japon como muchos suponian entonces.

La expedicion partio desde Siberia, desplazandose por tierra y a traves de los rios de esta region de Rusia, hasta alcanzar tras grandes penurias el poblado de Oxotsk, travesia que significo la muerte de caballos y expedicionarios, algunos de los cuales tambien abandonaron esta empresa. Desde Oxotsk cruzaron hasta la peninsula de Kamchatka desde donde partirian las embarcaciones de la expedicion hacia el norte.

En 1732 se organizaria una II expedicion de Kamchatka, conocida para la posteridad como la Gran expedicion del Norte, luego de que Vitus Bering propusiera al Almirantazgo una nueva expedicion que debia llegar a las costas de America del Norte y de Japon y realizar la descripcion de la costa artica de Siberia. La expedicion, que debia desplegarse entre el rio Pechora y Chukotka, quedo a cargo de 5 agrupaciones, quedando la mas occidental bajo responsabilidad del Almirantazgo (desde la desembocadura del Pechora hasta la desembocadura del rio Ob) y las 4 restantes a cargo de Bering: Ob-Yenisey, Yenisey-Xatanga, Lena-Xatanga y Lena-Kamchatka.


Como parte de la expedicion Bering junto al capitan Chirikov debian construir en Oxotsk o en Kamchatka dos embarcaciones "para la busqueda de las costas americanas, para que finalmente resultasen conocidas ... visitarlas y constatar genuinamente que pueblos viven alli, como llaman ese lugar y si se trata de verdad de las costas de America". Finalmente, tras 1 mes y medio de navegacion, cerca del mediodia del 16 de julio de 1741 divisaron unos macizos montan-osos entre nubes (las Saint Elias Mountains, en la frontera entre Canada y los Estados Unidos) pero solo pudieron acercarse a la costa del sector, debido a los debiles vientos, el 20 de julio. Varios marineros, el oficial Sofron Xitrovo y el naturalista Georg Steller descenderian para dirigirse hacia la orilla.

Estas montan-as serian bautizadas como Saint Elias por Vitus Bering en 1741. 
La cadena posee cimas que van desde los 4-6 mil metros.

En su viaje de regreso el San Pedro descubriria varias de las islas Aleutianas y zozobraria en una isla sin nombre donde Bering murio el 8 de diciembre de 1741 y que la posteridad bautizaria con su nombre.

La otra embarcacion que acompan-aba al San Pedro y que lo habia perdido de vista el 20 de junio por la niebla, el paquebote San Pablo, llegaria a las costas de America, al mismo lugar que Bering, un dia antes, el 15 de julio de 1741, sin embargo, el bote que se envio a explorar la costa con una decena de hombres no regresaria y un segundo bote, enviado una semana mas tarde, no lograria llegar a la costa por lo que Chirikov decidio tomar el camino de regreso a Kamchatka.


Como resultado de esta II expedicion, que se concreto entre 1733-1743, se realizo, por primera vez, una descripcion de diversos sectores de la costa del Artico ruso, se descubrio la costa de America del Norte y se puso en los mapas el curso inferior de los grandes rios de Siberia. Ademas, se logro estudiar de modo cientifico las poblaciones aborigenes, las Islas Kuriles y los rusos arribarian oficialmente a las costas de Japon y de America. Se logro tambien demostrar la ausencia de tierras entre Kamchatka y America del Norte.

En la segunda mitad del siglo XIX el gobierno ruso le prestaria muchisimo menos atencion al Oceano Artico pues la mayor parte de los recursos financieros del Ministerio de marina se entregaban para viajes a otras regiones de nuestro planeta y de hecho a lo largo del siglo XIX las embarcaciones a vela del Imperio ruso lograron concretar 30 circunnavegaciones del Globo y 15 viajes a traves de porciones significativas de los oceanos del mundo. En tanto, en el campo de la cartografia de las regiones marinas los mares del norte contaban con areas sin detallar mientras que los desplazamientos por la Ruta maritima del norte hacia el Oceano Pacifico se habian practicamente detenido, aunque esto ultimo tenia que ver mas bien con la condicion de la Flota mercante del Mar Blanco que no estaba lo suficientemente preparada para navegar en aguas con mar congelado ademas de que las autoridades zaristas habian dejado que las operaciones de comercio exterior del pais quedaran a cargo de grandes empresas extranjeras.

A partir de 1877 se comenzo a utilizar el Mar de Kara para exportar produccion agricola y minera desde Siberia pero no se trato mas que de actividades aisladas pues las deficiencias de infraestructura de la Ruta del norte en terminos de puertos, rompehielos y equipos de navegacion ponian grandes trabas a las operaciones. De hecho, hasta 1919, de 122 operaciones solo 75 se pudieron completar exitosamente, y estas lograron transportan apenas 55 mil toneladas de carga.

Desde mediados de la decada de 1890 caravanas de buques mercantes ingleses realizaban travesias hasta el rio Yenisey durante el verano, lo que concretaban valiendose de cartas rusas y con el apoyo de pilotos locales que los guiaban en la navegacion, pero el hecho principal que golpearia el prestigio de la marina rusa seria la expedicion de Nordenkjold de fines de la decada de 1870.

Si bien la literatura cientifica de la epoca cientifica pretendio mostrar que se trato de una expedicion conjunta por el apoyo financiero prestado por el ruso Aleksandr Sibiryakov la verdad es que la empresa se realizo mayormente a cargo del gobierno sueco y de empresarios de este pais y su importancia no fue menor pues permitio demostrar por primera vez la utilizacion del SMP como ruta de transito Oeste-Este.

La expedicion se concreto entre 1878-1879, en la goleta Vega y bajo direccion del cientifico sueco Nils Adolf Erik Nordenskjold. La travesia (imagen superior) permitio concretar el primer viaje sin escalas (aunque con una invernada) a traves del SMP, yendo desde el Oceano Atlantico hasta el Pacifico. Dado que la expedicion continuo viaje a traves de Japon y del Canal de Suez hasta Suecia concretaria, ademas, la primera circunvalacion maritima por las costas de Eurasia de la historia.

Nordenskjold nacio y estudio en Helsinki, cuando Finlandia era parte del Imperio Ruso Siendo un joven estudiante apoyo la intervencion de los fineses contra el zarismo y fue deportado del Imperio Ruso a la patria de sus ancestros, a Suecia, donde se especializo en mineralogia y se transformo en profesor aunque se sentiria mucho mas atraido por el Artico.

A pesar de que Nordjenskold demostro que el norte de Rusia podia cruzarse por via maritima lo extenso de la navegacion lo llevo a concluir que era inutil pensar en el uso de la Ruta maritima del norte con propositos comerciales.

Para Rusia era imprescindible utilizar los resultados de esta expedicion foranea para fortalecer sus intereses nacionales en el Artico lo que comenzaria a concretarse hacia fines del siglo XIX. Asi, el 5 de agosto de 1898 se construiria en el golfo de Kola el puerto militar de Aleksandrovsk, hoy Polyarn
